Description of 1972 Porsche 914 |
Up for auction is an 99 percent original 1972 Porsche 914. This car was last registered in 1986. and was purchased at an estate auction by a gentleman who owns car shop in our town. The porsche was stored in 1986-87 in a barn which was free of moisture. and was not brought out into the light of day until 2014. My father-in-law had a 914 when he was younger and always talked fondly of those cars. and this one was on the side of the road and he just had to have it. Upon taking delivery of the car. I began to realize that this was more of a project than he wanted to take on. he is much more of a "tinkerer". nbsp; and he has decided to sell the car as he got it. except from some cleaning and tidying that he has done. I am mechanically inclined and I have restored numerous cars. but I am in the middle of getting my BSN and we my wife and I just had a baby. so jumping into another project (in addition to my 1970 Bronco) is pretty much out of the question. Also. I will be honest. I think this car is cool and all. but anyone who has restored a vehicle knows that "cool" doesn't work. you have to have a love affair with a vehicle to be willing to endure all of the hard work. That being said. she is ready for someone to take her on and get her on the road. which doesn't (in my opinion) look like it will be tough for someone who loves this old gal. This car has a Blue Texas title and also comes with the original owners manual. and three keys - two black keys. and a red key (Valet key?)I will go through this car and try and provide you with all of the information that I would want to know when purchasing an old car. Attached are 70+ photos of everything I can think of. as you will see this little car is very straight and has very few rust issues. if any at all. Body: The body is really straight. paint is original. there are a few little hail type dents and thats about it. Some of the red paint has faded off on the trunk and you can see the grey primer underneath. As far as rust goes. the rockers are clean. the floors are great. the trunk has a little surface rust. but thats pretty much it. 914 owners laugh when I say it has hardly any rust. but it really does. The only area I can see that would require a tiny bit or repair is the trunk lid. right on the edge there are some tiny rust bubbles. There is a little dent in the front hood. and the front plastic bumper is kinda janky. but it could be reattached I think. Exhaust: Muffler is totally rotted and nasty. Just kinda hanging on there. Engine: I have not tried to start this car. I checked the oil and it looked good. The engine is all complete. all the air cleaners and hoses are there. but it would definitely need a going through. I have heard horror stories about the infamous "hell hole" which is essentially a giant rust hole underneath the battery. and it is a very expensive repair. This car is structurally sound in that area (see pics). it does have some surface rust and needs to be treated to prevent further damage. Fuel System- When my father in law was still toying around with the idea of keeping this car. I pulled th gas tank. it was very very nasty and there was a weak spot in it that he cut out. It goes with the car. the evaporators are on there and look good. I would be glad to dispose of whatever the buyer doesnt want to keep. Doors- The doors open. close. lock as they should. They fit great and the gaps are nice. The door panels are in great shape. Windows: The glass is good on the whole car. Interior: The interior is very very clean for its age. The dash has some cracking. and it is complete and original except for the addition of a tape player at some point. The seats are in nice shape. the drivers side has some splitting. but presents well. The carpet is complete and original. I would use it after a good shampooing. All of the knobs are there and function as should. Electrical: I have not tried to start this car. however I did hook a battery up to it to see what worked. Suprisingly. everything worked. break lights. blinkers. headlights (go up and down). heater. wipers. everything works! It does need a battery tray in the engine compartment though. as the other one was basically disintegrated. The horn button sticks a little but works. very loudly. Tires: The tires are very old western auto tires. They hold air and roll well. but I would not drive anywhere. The rims are original. the hubcaps are nice. and the car has a spare in it as well with jack and tow hooks. Breaks: Very soft. pedal goes all the way to the floor. Transmission: This is very sloppy. in my opinion I think this vehicle was parked because the shift bushings went out on it. Everything else looks and seems ok. the shifting is really sloppy and its pretty hard to figure out what gear it is in. Targa Top: The latch on the drivers side is broken and therefore the top does not seal well. For initial transport. the guy we bought it from duct taped the top down. I guess to keep it from flying off while in transit. This is a really nice restoration candidate. and it needs to go to a 914 guy who can bring her back to life. Feel free to ask any questions. and I can be reached by telephone at 214-968-1212. The car is located in Gatesville. TX (close to Waco). nbsp; and I can store the car at my shop for a few days while the buyer arranges shipping. This car will need to be loaded with a winch. because it does not roll "great" and the ground it is parked on is fairly soft. $200 deposit due within 48 hours. payment arrangements can be made following. Once again. I am no expert. so feel free to call and ask questions. and I can walk out there and look at whatever you are concerned with. Thanks and have a great day. Just surface rust. no rust through Please see below. the tiny rust bubbles on the trunk lid Below is the broken latch in the targa top Pictures of the area below the battery tray (battery tray was removed). this is where the "hell hole" would be dent on the hood Nasty Gas Tank Undercarriage- very dirty. greasy. |
