About the Porsche 928 GTS

The Porsche 928 was a revolutionary car when it was introduced in 1978, and the design still looks fresh nearly 40 years later. The front mounted, water cooled V8 was a dramatic departure from the manufacturer of the air-cooled, rear engine 911, but it was met with universal admiration for its Grand Touring abilities and it still has been the only Sports/GT car to win the ‘European Car of The Year Award,’ which it did in 1978.

The 928 had a very long, 18 year production run, and at the end in 1995 Porsche had produced 61,056 examples. By comparison Porsche just made its 1,000,000th 911! For the last version, the 928 GTS, produced from 1992 to 1995, Porsche only made 2,831.

The 928 started out with a 4.5L V8 with 240 hp, a Mercedes sourced 3 Speed Automatic or 5 Speed Manual and 16” ‘Telephone Dial Wheels’. Many had the Op Art ‘Pasha’ interior. The engine, gearbox, brakes and suspension were steadily developed over the years and the original model gave way to the 928S, 928S4, 928GT and finally, in 1992, the 928GTS was released.

This final model, the GTS, had a 5.4L, 32 Valve V8 with 350hp and offered a 0-60mph of 5.4seconds, and a top speed of 173mph. Gearbox choices were either the Porsche 5sp Manual, or a 4 Speed Automatic. It cost $usd80,920 in America, $C110,000 in Canada, and DM170,000 in Germany. Or, about the price of a nice house in any of the 3 countries.

The 928 GTS’s engine had a longer stroke giving it 5,397 cc’s, lighter pistons and a 10.4:1 compression ratio. Complementing the longer stroke crankshaft were forged-steel connecting rods. Better water flow also gave better emissions. The engine is rated at 350hp@5,700rpm and torque is 369lb/ft @ 4,250rpm.

Brakes were improved with increased diameter rotors to 322mm and the calipers were repositioned. The wheels were the ‘Cup’ Design from the 993 with 7.5” front and 9” rear with 225/45ZR 17, and 255/40ZR 17 front and rear sizes.

Bodywork was modified to make room for the larger wheels, with aggressive fender bulges. A full width rear light bar was added between the tail lights. The rear wing was now painted to match the body colour, as opposed to black in the S4/GT.

A team of 4 Austrians, in 1992, drove a stock 928 to the Nardo Test track and ran a 928 for 24 hours and 3,962km, averaging 165.12mph. Then drove the car home. At the time, the 928 GTS was the fastest Catalyst equipped production car in the world.

Porsche’s director of customer racing activities, Jurgen Barth, said of the car, “For me, the 928 was the perfect car…When, like me, you drive long distances each year, you begin to see what a great car it is. You had enough space, and it did everything you wanted it to do. I used to drive home from meetings at the FIA headquarters in Paris, and needless to say my personal record for that journey was in a 928”

The 928 has never had the widespread following of the 911, but it has always had an intelligent circle of buyers who appreciated its ergonomic design, mechanical engineering and Grand Touring capabilities. It has never been inexpensive to service, and parts can be expensive – though still widely available. Tight packaging makes fixing routine oil leaks time consuming, and the timing belt and water pump need to be changed every 5 years. This is one of those cars that you need to budget for ‘5 year Major Services’, and these can easily cost over $10,000. Many, or even the majority of 928 owners neglect this, and then sell when the ‘to do’ list becomes too onerous, littering the market with deferred maintenance examples that can be extremely expensive to sort out. As with many older and complex European cars, a full maintenance history is extremely important, and the best purchase advice is to buy the best you can afford. True with many older cars, and especially true with a 928, is there is nothing more expensive than a ‘cheap’ 928. There are very few really good cars out there, and Dealers generally don’t want anything to do with them, as the reconditioning costs as a percentage of the cars’ value is uneconomic.

Happily the recent upswing in the collector car market has made 928’s worth more, particularly the very first and very last examples, which makes reconditioning or restoring the cars economically viable, saving many cars from undignified ruin.

On offer, this 928 GTS is a Canadian Market, low km, original paint example that has had the benefit of more than $15,000 in recent expenditures; including a $11k mechanical service, new tires, and a genuine PORSCHE Classic Radio/Nav/Bluetooth infotainment system. It was purchased from a 12 car collection along with our 1987 BMW M6 which is in similar condition. The previous owner of the last 15 years was an engineer who did his own annual fluid services on the cars, and who kept the cars garaged, spotless, and kept the leather soft with regular applications of ‘hide food’. Service records verify the low mileage and periodic timing belt replacements.

This 928 has a clean CARPROOF and shows no signs of accident damage and no paint work other than some polar silver paint blown into the front LHS fender top due to a few unfortunate scratches and one dime-sized area on the corner of the rear spoiler which was chipped. Paint meter readings are shown in the Flickr album, and show all panels with paint depth variance within 0.3millimeters (300microns).The car has never been sun damaged, and the dash is free from cracks and warpage. The window seals and door rubbers are still supple. The car, being driven in Vancouver and Calgary, and only in nice weather, has never been subjected to harsh climates.

The leather interior retains its natural patina and has never been re-dyed or painted. The drivers bolster has some light wear commensurate with the mileage of the car, and all the leather retains its natural suppleness and aroma.

It has all of its original equipment apart from the head unit, which was just upgraded to a State-of-the-art Porche Classic Radio/Nav/Bluetooth unit which incorporates modern iPhone/Andriod connectivity, yet looks very close to a period radio preserving the ambiance of the cabin. It blends in nicely and works seamlessly and offers excellent sound quality – in fact it sounds better in the 928 than any of our new Bose equipped Porsches!

Summary

This is one of about 2,831 928 GTS, and one of perhaps 150 Canadian Market cars. It has very low km for this model, and is in completely original condition. It has always been looked after and correctly serviced. It has never been in an accident, and has never needed to be repainted. The car’s performance is still impressive as are its road manners and refinement. The design still looks fresh and interesting even after 40 years. It is a classic that has investment potential, but can be used and enjoyed as a daily driver.

FAQ:

Who are we?:Porsche Centre Calgary is a franchised Porsche Dealer serving Southern Alberta Canada. We happen to like old cars of all types, and a small but fun portion of our business is dealing with collector cars. You can contact Lawrence Romanosky (who buys most of the cars and writes the adsthrough eBay or phone at 403-607-8625.)

Taxes and fees:There are no dealer fees. Canadian residents need to pay 5% GST. You don’t pay Canadian Taxes if the vehicle is shipped out of the country.

Payment: Wire transfer is easiest, within 7 days of the auction close is the expectation.

Shipping to the US: We can handle the logistics shipping to US addresses. The cost is usually between $2,500 and $3,500. There will be brokerage fees and duty on the car which are approx. $500 + 3% of the value of the car. Budget $7,000 for most US addresses to have the car delivered to your door via enclosed truck transport. You can send us the payment for the car plus $7,000 and we will take care of the rest and you can expect to receive the car between 3 and 6 weeks from the time of payment.

Shipping to Europe: We can handle this too. Generally the car would travel by container, and the cost would be about $5,000 to any of the major ports in Europe.

What if I want to have a running/driving car delivered to me?We can do that and charge you for the additional work we do, depending on what you want us to do. You would need to pay for the car first though.

Warranty: Sorry, no.
