ENGINE # 85448TRANSAXLE # 43357BODY # 89347Offered for sale, from KURT TANNER MOTORCARS, is this rare and desirable 356 Roadster for restoration. This car was recently purchased from it’s long term owner from the East Coast where it was originally a Hoffman delivered car from new. This car was originally finished at the Porsche factory in the superb and desirable factory colors of Heron Gray with blue trim, as indicated by it’s Kardex. At some point early in it’s life, the car’s original Super engine (# 89128) was changed out for it’s current slightly earlier Super unit (#85448). We believe the car sustained some light front end damage in 1974 and has been off the road since. There’s a New Jersey registration sticker still attached to the windshield from 1975. The previous owner had the car under restoration when it was purchased by us.The bodywork on this car is currently being restored. The previous owner has indicated that all of the newer front sheetmetal in green primer is NOS and was sourced in Germany at great expense. A new hood has been purchased along with two front fenders and a nose panel. The bodyshell has been braced for repairs and is attached to a rolling dolly for ease of moving and working on it. The car has currently been fitted with a complete new floor pan and longitudinals, all to a good standard, according to our eye. Also included are jacking points, end closing panels, headlamp bowls, supports, etc. and we believe that all the new sheetmetal required for repairs has been purchased and is of very good reproduction quality (Stoddard, etc). All of the old sheetmetal has been retained. The rear end of the car looks excellent as well as the front of the car’s inner structure. There is some minor light rippling noticed on the LH front inner structure probably due to the previous light accident, but easily repaired. The car’s interior has been removed from the car and retained except consumables like carpet, old trim. The car’s dashboard is still fitted with it’s instruments and windshield assembly. The interior door components looks present including the door glass, regulators, catches, etc.According to factory records, the car’s current Super engine looks to be produced around early 1960. It’s fully assembled, looks very complete and original, and turns very nicely by hand, with oil up to the mark, and may even run well again. It’s fitted with some later Weber carbs and intake manifolds. The car’s transaxle assembly has been removed from the car and left intact. There’s 5 date coded wheels with hubcaps ranging from 12/60 to 2/61.The car appears to be quite complete, but we’ve noticed it’s missing a few items: soft top frame, rear engine lid, fuel tank, rear bumper assembly. All really sourceable stuff, being a “B†model. This roadster still retains all of its factory stamping / VIN plates.Overall, this project 1961 356 B Super Roadster is a rare offering in this condition and modest price range. It’s a desirable and very popular open 356 model and is clearly worth the time and effort needed to bring it back to it’s original condition and color scheme. Please look at all pictures and call or email with any questions. We will assist in shipping worldwide.
