We started this as a non-running project which had been in storage for an extended amount of time. The Porsche now runs and drives but WILL NEED TO BE TRAILERED HOME.
This 1978 Porsche 924 was sold new at Art Bunker Porsche Audi, Inc in Overland Park, KS and was serviced there for the first year according to the service manual. The car is finished in Malagarot Red over a black interior, and power is provided by a 2.0-liter inline-four mated to a four-speed manual transaxle. A previous owner had the Porsche fitted with a BAE Turbo and aftermarket gauges sometime in its life. I acquired the car about a year and a half ago from North Carolina. It had been in storage for an extended amount of time. The Porsche comes with the original date code tires from 1978 so we believe the miles to be original. Stamped ownerâ€™s manual and warranty & maintenance manual are included although the last records in the manual or available are from 1979.
The exterior is finished in Malagarot (H5) with black accents. Exterior paint is believe to be original but the vehicle sat outside at some point in its life and shows wear. The undercarriage and under hood are in excellent condition for being an original car. Features include pop-up headlights, a glass canopy hatch, integrated impact bumpers, manually operated adjustable seats, roll-up windows, left side hand brake, and a Blaupunkt cassette radio.Included with the sale are two sets of wheels and tires. The factory 14x6 alloy 8 spoke wheels are mounted to the original tires date coded 1978. We bought a second set of identical wheels that has a new set of tires that are currently mounted on the vehicle.
We started out by cleaning the entire fuel system. Draining the tank, disassembling the fuel injection system and cleaning everything before starting the engine. A tune up, cooling system rebuild, oil change, filter change, and timing belt replacement was performed then a new battery installed. The fuel pump relay was found to be bad so we bypassed it and is currently constant hot with the battery connect. We started the Porsche up and drove it about 20 miles earlier this year in April. There is resistance somewhere in the drivetrain that will need to be investigated. The vehicle will rev up easily when in neutral but is limited (similar to if the rear parking brake was set or your foot on the brake when trying to drive down the road) when in gear. This occurs in all gears at all speeds. We parked the Porsche at that time until last week. The Porsche fired back up and was able to be driven around for pictures and video. Since the Porsche has been sitting about 7 months the brakes have gone soft. I think it is the rear wheel cylinders but do not have time to investigate. The Porsche cannot be driven home and will need to be trailered.
