The actual VIN is VF1112C003164686. This is a non-standard VIN as it was imported from Europe. 1990 Renault 4 TL ‘Savane’. A rare car - 1 of only 8 million made between 1962 and 1990! Like the VW Beetle, this was one of the world’s most successful cars due to its affordability and usability. Never officially imported into North America, this is actually an extremely rare car in the USA with a great provenance. It was previously owned and registered in the UK by Gordon Murray, the ex-Brabham and McLaren championship winning Formula 1 designer, and designer of the Lightweight Company ‘Rocket' and most prominently, the McLaren F1, recently voted the world’s all-time greatest Supercar. Given that the McLaren F1 remains one of the fastest supercars ever made, it’s rather amusing to think of him driving around in this Renault 4, one of the least fastest cars in the world! Nevertheless, its a hoot to drive, especially with the dash-mounted shifter. The ride is fantastic and with seat belts in the back, it’s practical for the family too. The Renault 4 L, pronounced "Quatrelle", is full of quirky and charming features such as slide windows, dash mounted shifter, longitudinal engine with transmission in front, and unequal wheel base to name a few. The car was originally registered in France (it comes with the original French registration plates) and imported by Gordon Murray to the UK in March of 2012. He owned it for over 3 years. During that time the car inspired his design of the ‘OX’ flat-pack truck for third world countries, as mentioned in this Top Gear article: car-news/big-reads/can-flat-pack-truck-save-world His eclectic car collection is mentioned in an interview of Goodwood, also detailing this Renault 4: grrc/road/news/2014/6/qa-gordon-murray-wants-to-prove-hybrid-hypercars-wrong/ The car also comes with the UK registration plates, copies of the UK (V5) Registration documents (proving his ownership), MOT test certificates (DOT annual multi-point inspections) of which the last one was completed just prior to being exported to the USA. The car also had a recent service there, including rear brakes, wheel bearings and new heat exchanger. It is 100% rust-free and 100% original. Amongst the history file, there is a workshop manual and parts catalogue. Last of all, included in the sale is a model of the Lightweight ‘Rocket’ and a signed letter from Gordon Murray, again confirming ownership of this car. Mileage is showing 126k Kilometers / 78k miles. However this is unconfirmed, but we have several MOT receipts and previous documents that help verify.
