Description of 1967 Shelby SHELBY AMERICAN GT500

1967 Shelby GT500 #1330 – Yes, the Real Deal Manufactured by Shelby American, Inc. in Los Angeles, California in 1967.

Here you have a nice very original 1967 Shelby GT500 dressed in the most popular color of Nightmist Blue complemented by White Lemans Racing Stripes.

Carroll Shelby and team got things rolling in ’65 with the Shelby GT350s and the next generation Shelby Mustang was the GT500, and it incorporated Ford's new big block power. Upscale, professional and well off, the buyers Shelby and Ford targeted wanted performance at their disposal but also demanded their performance cars be comfortable and reliable daily drivers. The heart and soul of the car starts with the big block 428 cubic inch V8 Police Interceptor. This motor featured a 10:1 compression, high lift cam and a pair of 600 cfm Holley four-barrels with progressive linkage and vacuum secondary's on an aluminum medium rise intake manifold. It was rated at a conservative 355 horsepower but Shelby enthusiasts claim it actually pumped out some 50hp more while generating 420 lb-ft of tire scorching torque. For 1967, Shelby Mustangs got progressive rate springs that were comfortable on the freeway but stiffened as they were compressed to give good handling. The 1967 Shelby Mustangs came with the full complement of scoops as well as unique fiberglass hood, nose and rear deck. This Mustang on steroids filled the bill perfectly and outsold the 1967 GT350 by nearly two to one. Over the course of the year 2,048 were built, all in the fastback body style. In 1967 there really was nothing that could surpass the Shelby GT500, it overpowered the competition on the track, back streets and straightaways, and was just plain bad-to-the-bone giving free attitude adjustments to anyone and everything that stood in its way.

#1330 was originally delivered to Max Curtis, Inc. dealership in Lansing, Michigan. Pull the hood pins and underneath is her original famous 428 Police Interceptor power plant that defined this model year of Shelby Mustangs. This year was also the only Shelby with the 2x4bbl Holly Carburetors on the engine displaying the Cobra Le Mans ribbed valve covers. #1330 has the desirable 4-Speed numbers matching manual transmission sporting the awesome “black cue ball” style shifter. Power front disc with rear drum brakes and power steering were mandatory options. The exterior of the car looks wonderful in consideration of its age, finished in the beautiful factory Nightmist Blue (one repaint in early ‘90s). This is a classic Shelby with the overall look of a respected muscle machine proudly showing off the years of originality. The Black Knitted Vinyl interior has the patina and age of an original car. The front bucket seats where recovered 10 years ago and the rear seat is all original in very good condition as well as the wood steering wheel is in surprisingly good condition. Complete with factory roll bar, inertia reel shoulder harnesses and fold down rear seat. Other conveniences of the day include an AM Radio, Clock, Driver-Remote Chrome Mirror and Oil/Amp gauges mounted under the dash in front of the shifter.

#1330 received the Chuck Cantwell award at SAAC-31 which is recognition of how a ’67 Shelby GT500 would have looked on the dealer’s lot when they were new. #1330 is well documented and all VINs confirmed with SAAC. A Deluxe Marti Report confirms #1330 came off the Ford San Jose Assembly Plant having been built on February 2, 1967 and then delivered to Shelby American, Inc. in Los Angeles. SAAC records confirm completion of #1330 on April 26, 1967 by Shelby American, Inc. and interestingly not shipped to Max Curtis, Inc. in Lansing, Michigan until October 13, 1967. Ownership history is documented in the SAAC Shelby World Registry. Additional documentation includes a copy of the production order form which noted #1330 as Dearborn Inventory; copies of the Shelby American warranty work; copy of the 7-page Ford Special Vehicle Order and Parts Spec Sheet.

A few more details on #1330 as she is a great driver and equipped with her original 428PI engine and original 4-speed manual transmission with the Ford VIN stamped to the housing. She has the original 2-4bbl carbs. She has an aluminum water pump but original goes with the car. She has headers but the original exhaust manifolds go with the car. She has Detroit locker rear end but the original rear hub goes with the car. She has aftermarket AM/FM cassette player but original AM radio goes with the car. Currently, a set of 5 spoke Magstars are on the car but a set of 10 spoke wheels/tires are also available, if desired and go with the car. All original sheet metal (no rust) and fiberglass panels are original. #1330 has the functional brake ducts. #1330 has the inboard headlights. #1330 has the rear valence panel aluminum trim rings around exhaust outlets. #1330 passenger side sun visor is signed by Carroll Shelby.

So, if you have been looking for a muscle car with no stories...look no further. She's got the look, the sound, the history and only needs her next caretaker. Don't mess this opportunity to own a true 1967 Shelby GT500.
