Description of 1948 Studebaker Commander Coupe Starlight |
Vehicle Details A beautiful 1948 Studebaker Commander Starlight Coupe! Such a beautiful car that still evokes the optimism and energy of America after WW2. Designed by the famous studios of Raymond Loewy with most of the work done by Virgil Exner the starlight coupe was the special model that would define the great design race that would exemplify American styling for the next 2 decades. This car does not run. It belonged to the father of the man I bought it from. His father had owned it since the 70’s and had taken us wife on many western states road-trips in it all the way in to the 90’s. In January of 2021 his father found a true Studebaker engine (it had always had a smaller Chevrolet motor) and at the age of 94 he swapped the motor out and the tragically died 2 months later. I bought it because I love Studebakers and intended to rewire it and get it chugging along. I have many parts with it including a complete wiring harness and rebuilt starter motor. There isn’t any rust on the body. The glass is in excellent shape, and the interior must have been redone in the 90’s it’s all in wonderful shape. The front seat is currently in my basement so I could lay down and work under the dash when I started rewiring. So far, I’ve just disconnected the gauges. 3 on the tree manual transmission with the rare overdrive option. |
