Description of 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser

This is a 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado LJ71 originally from Japan (JDM). Probably the cheapest nicest 70 series you're going to find. It is a right-hand drive, 4 speed automatic turbo diesel. While the vehicle is currently located in CA, it is registered in NV with a clean title. Buyer should know this vehicle is very difficult (but not impossible) to register in CA due to it being an imported diesel. I suggest registering out of state if possible.

Overall the vehicle is in excellent condition and low miles for being 26 years old. There is 68 miles (109km) on the odometer. The right hand drive is not as weird as you'd think, I got used to it after about 20 minutes when I test drove it with the previous owner. Engine is an economical 4-cylinder turbo diesel that gets very good mileage (25-30 mpg). On the exterior there are a couple paint chips on the right fender and some small dings in the rear bumper. On the interior the only thing that doesn't work is the radio. It has working AC, power locks, power windows, power mirrors, locking hubs, 2-hi, 4-hi and 4-low drive. Solid axles front and rear, shock / spring suspension. Most importantly there is no rust!

It has been in the US since May 2016. The gentleman who imported (not me) specifically looks for rust-free cruisers from the south of Japan. He's unsure of its history in Japan, but suspect it spent a lot of time in a garage due to its good condition and low miles. A sticker inside the hood indicates major service was done (timing belt, pumps, etc.) at 35k miles (56km). I bought and shipped it from NC last Thanksgiving.

Since owning it I have:

  • Had it inspected by Toy Connection in Santa Clara. They specialize in old Toyota 4x4s and found no major issues with it other than the shocks need to be replaced. They verbally quoted me $500 for the work and I have their contact info if buyer is interested.

  • New tires! Put brand-new Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires on it and got a (used) full-size spare mounted to the back.

  • Baselined coolant system. Had a Toyota dealership pressure test, flush coolant and replace with Toyota Red, added Redline water wetter and replaced the radiator cap.

  • Serviced the fan clutch. The silicone oil inside these are known to wear out after ~20 years. I replaced the oil inside and recalibrated it to pull more air through the radiator.

  • Replaced the air filter with a Toyota OEM one.

I have the documentation to go along with most of this stuff.

I'm selling it because I had big plans for turning this into an adventure machine, but realize it is too small and too old for what I want. I want something I can pack more people / gear in. I also don't have easy access to a garage, tools or frankly the time / experience to justify continued ownership of this kind of vehicle. I'm asking $13k cash only, and would only consider trades for a 2012 or newer Jeep Wrangler Unlimited + cash on my end.
