Description of 1986 Toyota Van CARGO

1986 Toyota Van. Condition is "Used".Title clear and in hand.
Not currently running.2 front seats - cargo style.
What parts I am aware it needs mechanically are(prices are approximated):Marine (recommended due to location of case) Battery $120.00Distributor/Rotor $15.00Power Steering Pump $60.00 - rockauto online order/core fee & refundA/C Compressor $60.00 - rockauto online order/core fee & refundTune up/Oil ChangeIn 2016 it passed inspection in TX without any problems. It has sat now for 3+ years so there are most likely other things will be discovered needing as well as some body work.
This is a classic, 34 yr old van. I'd say one of the few last survivors of the 1980's Toyota Vans in decent condition.
A great collector restore project OR part it out to those needing these rare vehicle parts for 3 to 4 times the price I've listed here.
In the 4 yrs I drove it I can't tell you how many times I was asked (especially while waiting at red lights) "What IS that van?!!!" and I've always gotten thumbs up and "That is so cool!" from anyone who's asked.
For the few that remain on the road, these vans are affectionately called "YOTA's" and during the time I was driving it, I found quite a few online car clubs that were sharing information about fixes and body parts finding/listings.
I know all mechanical parts can be purchased rebuilt with warranty via rockauto.com easily and reasonably priced. (I've installed many.) A receipt history of work *I* had done on it since 2013 including windshield glass repair of dings will be included in sale.
When I bought it, I immediately had the engine, radiator and transmission flushed (mechanic told me he was surprised for its age there were very few "shavings" in the tranny pan), new fan belts & some hoses installed and some engine wiring replaced with authentic Toyota parts.
I also had the front ball joints, all shocks and brakes, tires and the muffler replaced. Additionally I had the A/C retrofitted from R12 to R134a and the blower blasted extremely frigid air. Sadly, the compressor, for its age, gave up and needs to be replaced. Yet, a rebuilt compressor is available through rockauto.com for approx $60.
For those not aware, this Toyota vehicle has a 2.2L gasolene forklift engine in it. I've been told by other Toyota van owners and my mechanics these engines run for nearly forever and, I suppose the testament is 229k miles on the original engine.
A mechanic also told me it would be an easy propane conversion too... well, if that's your thing. Also included in the sale is the Chilton 1986 Toyota repair & service manual as well as other original materials.
From what the previous owner told me when I bought it, he travelled from CA to PA in it without problem. I bought it and travelled from PA to TX in it without problem. Gas mileage for my trip was about 19-21 mpg fully loaded. Top speed fully loaded going uphill was 55 mph. Downhill fully loaded was 75. Of course your mileage will vary depending upon the load and road conditions.
In fall of 2017 it wouldn't start a few days after a friend accidentally (and unknowingly) tipped a gallon bottle of plain water on the passenger seat. After a little investigating I found the water not only soaked the seat-- which dried perfectly fine-- but it had dribbled down onto the engine access hatch below the seat and I supposed onto the distributor cap.
Yes, access to this engine is via tilting forward either or both front seats and opening hatches beneath and from behind. Not always a mechanics dream to work on, but the simplicity of the forklift engine is appreciated.
I was told by my mechanic the frame is solid and square as are the bumpers. The previous owner pointed out to me 1 area above the waist with a bondo job on the back end passenger side. Note bondo cracks and rust in picture #16.
There is also a bit of rust that has started around the windshield. Note picture #17. The windshield should be reset with a new gasket after body repair work is done. The windshield is not cracked.
There is a sunroof which was sealed before I bought it. It was not a necessity to have it fixed to open or replaced during my ownership. It does NOT leak.
The roof luggage rack is in excellent shape. There is a buckled roof area at the far end of the van which I discovered just after I bought the van, got it home and began working on it. It surprised me the previous owner didn't mention it, but since it didn't affect the interior nor could it be easily seen from a ground stand point, I never had it repaired. Note picture #18.
THERE ARE NO WATER LEAKS INSIDE THE VAN. In fact, the body seals on this vehicle are in surprisingly supple shape, I suspect they were replaced not long before I bought it.
During the time I drove it there were no leaks from any part of the engine-- save the A/C compressor-- and at present there are no leaks showing beneath it on the ground in the driveway, although I suspect after sitting so long, there may be seals to replace now.
The low tires in the pictures are simply due to it sitting unmoved. There's still a good amount of tread on them, but they should be inspected.
The interior is, for its age, in very good shape. The headliner has no holes, rips or stains. The seat upholstery is also in good condition. The dash and steering wheel have no cracks. A tan colored custom dash cover in excellent condition is included with the sale as well as a portable contractors console that fits between the 2 front seats on the transmission mound.
The rear cargo carpet is pretty destroyed. It was like that when I purchased it and I was told by the previous owner that's how he got it too. I put in a 3/4" foam utility pad to cover the back cargo area which served well for my trip. The rest of the carpet is deteriorating, yet has few holes or stains for its age and miles.
The cargo wall panels are complete and were only removed to begin recovering. I was not able to complete that project, but the brand new, several yards of heavy duty dark brown polyester canvas are also included in the sale.
Everything I've stated here is true to the best of my knowledge. However, no warranty can be given on this nearly 35 yr old vehicle.
At the time the van stopped running, I was not well nor financially able to have work done on it. Now I am selling it because I am moving to another state so that I may be cared for by family.
If I think of anything more to add in this description I shall and, in the meanwhile, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask below and I will do my best to reply within 24 hrs.
My personal hope is that someone sees all the potential in this very cool van and restores it to its unique glory.
