Description of 1975 Triumph TR-6 |
1975 Triumph TR-6 with 6,979 Original Miles - Collector Owned, one Better This beautiful 1975 Triumph TR-6 is part of a 60+ car private collection in Austin, exas. I acquired this TR-6 in December of 2013 from the original owner in Enid, klahoma where the car had been carefully stored away since 1984. It was, nd is, n absolute time-capsule and a rare opportunity to own a near-new, eventies British roadster. The car was purchased by its original owner in April of 1975 from Fretwells, he authorized Triumph dealer in Oklahoma City, K. Highly optioned with overdrive, ir conditioning, nd a hardtop, he car was sold new for $6,550.The original owner, ho was in his thirties at the time, urchased the car as a "summer fun" car for he and his wife and the car was used sparingly for leisure activities over the next decade. 10 years later, fter one final summer of fun, he car was parked in their garage, ently covered, nd would not see the light of day again for almost 30 years when the owner, ow in his seventies, ould finally sell the car to me. The car still wears its last plates and final inspection sticker issued on 6/30/84 documenting the mileage at the time of inspection at 5,784 original miles. Incredibly, wing to the intense summer heat in their part of the country, he original owners preferred to drive the car using the AC with the factory hardtop and when I received the car the dealer-installed hardtop had never been off the car. We had the unique pleasure of removing the hardtop for the first time and uncovering the brand new soft top underneath which had never been raised. If you're a car guy, t just doesn't get much better than that. I believe this car to be one of the finest, f not the finest, R-6's in the world. The combination of outstanding color, ow-mileage, are options, xtensive documentation and exceptional original condition make this car an instant contender at any preservation class concours in the country. If you've been waiting for the best, urge you to come see this car. You may never see another one as good as this. Further information is provided below. Mechanicals:When the car arrived at my facility in Austin it hadn't been driven in decades. We were told by a representative of the original owner that the car may have been started 10 years earlier but we had no documentation to support that and the car looked to have been sound asleep for every one of the last thirty years. We immediately understood that the value of the car was in its originality and we took our time doing our research and coming up with a plan to bring the car back to life. While we wanted the car to be safe (and fun) we also wanted to preserve as many original parts as possible to maintain the history of this once-in-a-lifetime car. We began by inspecting the engine and transmission. While pretty to look at (how often do you you get to see a 40 year old motor in its original state like this?) we had no idea what was happening inside and the car had been stored for decades with fuel in the tank and coolant in the radiator. The initial good news was that the motor turned easily by hand so we took our time lubricating the cylinders for several weeks while we manually turned (and turned and turned) the engine. We then turned our attention to the fuel, gnition, nd cooling systems. The fuel tank was removed, rained, nd cleaned before the inside was re-coated and sealed. When we had the tank out we noticed the fuel level float had perished so it was replaced. After a full inspection front to back, e also replaced the fuel lines, uel pump and fuel filter. Turning our attention to the cooling system we pulled and flushed the radiator and replaced the thermostat and the water pump. A new set of hoses was purchased but a close inspection of the original green hoses showed them to be in excellent original condition and we only ended up replacing the lower radiator hose. Next came the ignition system which benefited from a new set of spark plugs, istributor cap, nbsp;points, otor and condenser. Finally, he fluids were changed, new Bosch battery was installed, nd it was the moment of truth. We turned the key and instantly, ithout so much as the slightest hesitation, he engine jumped to life and settled into a beautiful idle as if it hadn't been asleep for even a day let alone thirty years. Over the next weeks we performed a full mechanical inspection of the car resulting in our also replacing the brake master cylinder, ear wheel cylinders, lutch master and slave cylinders, verdrive solenoid, nd the tie rod end dust boots. The end result is a car that is an absolute joy to drive. It starts easily, very time, nd the motor pulls hard and runs cool even in the 100 degree Texas heat. It idles perfectly, rives straight, nd the transmission shifts smoothly requiring no unusual effort and moving smoothly into overdrive the moment you pull the lever. Everything in this car works. Everything. The gauges, he switches, he lights, he turn signals, he radio, ven the seatbelt warning system is fully functional. This is truly as close to the experience of driving a brand new TR-6 as you're likely ever going to have. The tires on the car are the original tires delivered on the car in 1975 and appear to be in excellent condition although, f you plan on driving this car extensively, 'd recommend installing new tires and keeping these for show. In addition, e did not charge the AC system which is intact and has never been converted from its original R12. Exterior:From every angle, he car presents beautifully in its factory color of Mimosa Yellow. The paint on the car is 100% original and the car shows no signs of prior work or accident damage. There are no dents or scratches - not even a door ding - and the paint appears closer to 40 days old than 40 years. The glass, rim, hrome, mblems, enses, ecals and exterior hardware are all original, ntouched, nd beautiful. And, f course, he original soft top has seen use of, iterally, ero miles. Other thanreplacing the rubber trim pieces at the top of each door, e did literally nothing to the exterior of this car other than give it a good cleaning. The only flaw worth mentioning is an area behind the cockpit on each side of the fuel filler where the use of the factory hardtop has resulted in some wear to the paint. It's a minor flaw, nd one that is easily corrected, ut we chose to preserve it as well-earned patina on a survivor car. In my years of collecting classic cars, have rarely seen a vehicle of this vintage in such pristine condition or one that presents closer to new. The cosmetics of this car will exceed your expectations. They certainly have mine. Interior:The interior of this TR-6 is a testament to what original, ow-mileage cars should be. The dashtop is gorgeous - free of cracks and showing no warping. The wood dash face is pristine. The door panels are beautiful. The controls and various switches are spotless. The seats are outstanding. The gauges are clear and bright appearing as new. The carpet is near-perfect and the original rubber floor mats look like they were installed yesterday. I've taken the time to provide multiple, lose-up photos of the interior from almost every angle. Please examine them closely and pay attention to the details. Yes, he big things like the dash, eats, nd door panels all look excellent. But look even more closely at the small things. The interior details of this car are absolutely as good as I've ever seen. Documentation:The car will be delivered with extensive documentation supporting the provenance and mileage of this incredible vehicle. Supporting documentation includes: A copy of the original Oklahoma title for the vehicle. The original State of Oklahoma excise tax receipt dated 5/3/75 and showing a title assignment date of 4/28/75.The original 1,000 mile service receipt from Fretwells dated 6/23/75.Original state registrations for every year the vehicle was registered from 1975 through 1984.Original state of Oklahoma Inspection certificates from 1976, 977, 980, 982 and 1984 each documenting the actual mileage at the time of inspection.Various insurance documents from the early eighties.
