Description of 1955 Triumph TR3

1955 Triumph small-mouth TR3. British Racing Green. Fresh ground up restoration completed in May, 015, ith 1,015 local miles currently on the odometer which had been reset to zero.

Commission number TS9100LO, B9035, hassis number 842167, uilt November 3, 955. This is the 464th TR3 built.

I've been involved with Triumphs for almost 40 years and this project was my first "retirement hobby" effort to bring a solid but tired early TR3 back to life. Restoration was a full frame-off effort with no detail spared. The body was in very good shape but required outer sill replacement as well as weld repairs (no fiberglass) to the floorboards.

Following these basic repairs, he body tub and all panels were media blasted and painted with epoxy primer on all sides. The paint is Standox "Standoblue" waterborne basecoat for the optimal finish, ollowed by Standox "Standocryl" urethane clearcoat. All inside panel and door surfaces and underside of body tub were subsequently coated with 3M undercoating #08881for maximum corrosion protection and sound deadening.

The original engine TS9530E has been rebuilt to 86 mm/2138 cc and has the uprated rear crankshaft seal that does not require machining off the scroll. It also has an uprated Steve Yott oil pump and the original SU carbs have been rebuilt. This engine also has the rare factory-installed LeMans head as fitted on engine numbers TS9350E through TS13052E. The high-capacity radiator (no crank hole) has been reconditioned.

Rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission and crisp overdrive 22/1374/001411, unctional in 2nd, rd, nd 4th gears. The original gearbox casing TS9475 was cracked and replaced with a casing from TS23861 and the gearbox internals were refreshed with new bearings, eals, ynchros, nd layshaft. The gearbox shifts smoothly and retains its original non-syncro first gear design.

60 spoke painted wire wheels with 165-15 Kumho tyres. The spare tyre is a 155-15 to allow fitting into the early spare tyre enclosure.

All new interior including black loop pile carpeting, lack seat covers with white piping, ear occasional seat, new door and dogleg panels, acia, nd cockpit capping.

All gauges and heater are reconditioned and in proper working condition.

New convertible top and hood sticks cover.

Rebuilt wedge type side curtains by The Roadster Factory.

With the exception of the safety modifications listed below, very effort has been made to restore this very early TR3 to as original condition as possible.

Safety modifications made to this car include:

  • Front disk brakes to replace the original drum brakes.

  • Girling rear axle TS46604 installed to replace the inherently weak original Lockheed axle S/N TS9832.

  • 4-way flasher with switch discretely hidden under facia.

  • Brake light modifications to allow all 3 rear lamps to light instead of just the original small number plate lamp light.

  • 12V accessory outlet discretely hidden under facia.

  • Negative ground Pertronix Ignition.

British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate is included. This car runs as good as it looks and has never been in the rain since completed. If you purchase this car, ou will be pleased. It is undoubtedly one of the finest early TR3's in the USA.
