Description of 1981 Triumph Other |
Overview Roadster Salon is the most widely recognized Italian car restorer in the US. While our focus has been Fiat, Alfa and Ferrari convertibles over the past 20 years, we are always interested in Roadsters of significant historical value. Certain British models like the Triumph TR8, TR6 and vintage MGB's have captured the fancy of our customers, and led us to include them in our list of eligible models for restoration. Occasionally we come across mint original and semi-original cars. The classic TR8 featured here is one of those special examples. While we certainly do not have the same experitise with TR8's as we do with Spiders, anyone can see that this particular Triumph is remarkable. We doubt you will see a nicer one on the street or at a show. Simply stunning. Please note we also have several other TR8 convertibles available for restoration, including both FI and carb versions. Cosmetic Impressions Upon close inspection our body technician told us that the paint on this car has been refinished. However, there are no obvious signs like overspray and the decals are original. If he is correct, the job was very high-end. We see no filler in the car, nor is there any evidence of rust or a previous accident. Overall the exterior is in exceptional condition, and looks like a well cared for two year old car. Even the bumpers, trim and gaskets look nice, and do not look like they are 30+ years old. The interior carries the same positive impression as the outside of the car. We assume that leather was an option on this car. The seats show very little wear, so they were likely replaced, or protected with a slip cover. Regardless, they look fantastic. Convertible top and boot cover are both in excellent condition. Carpets, dash, door panels and console all look terrific. No smells or signs of excessive wear on any surface. A+ Driving and Mechanical Impressions We ran the car through our service department and feel confident enough about its mechanical condition to cover it under our limited warranty. Really clean and solid. All maintenance is up to date. As stated earlier, our experience with British roadsters is limited. However, we have driven about a half dozen TR8 models in the past, and this one is by far the nicest. Wedge enthusiasts all have there preference between carb/fuel injected versions of the car. Since our emphasis is always on reliability, we prefer this version. This particular TR8 starts easily and warms quickly. No cold blooded issues, and the right car for states with strict emissions laws. Performance is excellent. Robust low end torque, combined with spirited upper-end power. Nothing to complain about here. During our test loop, we found the TR8 to be very nimble and quick. Braking and acceleration were solid, especially considering the era. Five speed transmission and clutch take-up are buttery smooth. Very easy to drive. A totally different vibe from the twin cam fours found in most Italian roadsters. We really liked driving this gem. It may have been a novelty, but I doubt it. Our interest in the lovely little convertible was genuine and contageous. Grade A Market Value To be blunt, the nicest examples of any classic car are going to be expensive. Those needing little or no reconditioning or mechanical work are rare. This TR8 belongs in the smallest sub-set of collector cars. Rare numbers, high performance for its day, and exceptional condition. It is also backed by a limited warranty. We can not say enough about this car. Frankly, had someone commissioned us to restore it, we would scratch our heads about what we could improve. Current NADA classic values for comparable 1981 TR8 roadsters are in the $25K-$30K range and rising. The TR8 is a future star. Don't miss your opportunity to get on the train before it leaves the station. This is an investment quality version that can be shown or driven to your delight. |
