Sam approached me at a Hill Country Triumph Club meeting, wanting to know if I would resurrect his 1971 TR6 that had not been driven in many years. He had just joined the club and was hot to get the car back on the road. An inspection was arranged, and I was delighted to find a very original, low mileage Triumph in outstanding condition. It is said that the 1971 TR6 is the best of the series, with the high compression engine and little in the way of smog equipment. Now here was a job that this hobbyist could really get enthusiastic about! This TR6 was purchased brand new by a Houston man in Pasadena, Texas and was relocated to Austin by Sam, its second owner. Residing exclusively in the Lone Star State accounts for the incredible state of preservation as can be seen in the underside photos. Rarely do you find a TR6 still showing the red primer on the underside of the floor pans, just like when it left the factory. The original jack and lug wrench are in the tidy trunk, and the owner’s manual and some original sales documents are still in the glove box. Aside from the rust-free body and amazingly solid drive-train, much of the car needed restoration. The fuel system, brakes, clutch, carburetors, cooling system, shock absorbers, windshield and more needed rebuilding or replacement. The interior got a new look with seats, carpet, crash-pads, visors, and a beautiful solid teak dash board. A new “top of the line†convertible top was fitted, along with new tires and battery. Check the photo section for the extensive list of new parts. Hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars later, Sam was back in the Triumph business! Now, after years of enjoyment, Sam has yielded to the urge to make garage space for his new Mini. Besides, the gearbox had developed an annoying whine in low gear! I jumped at the chance to purchase this lovely TR6, and besides, there was a rebuilt overdrive-gearbox lurking in my storage shed…just waiting for a new home. The upgrade to overdrive is complete and after many hours of detailing, the Triumph is ready for a new owner…no transport needed…drive it anywhere! The panel fit is the best that I have ever seen on a TR6 and this Triumph runs extremely well, with very good oil pressure, even when hot. The compression readings are 150-160…just like when the engine was new. The temp gauge stays well below center and the amp-meter verifies the correct state of charge. In the last few weeks, I have completely rebuilt the front suspension and installed poly-bushings on the rear trailing arms. As would be expected, the brakes are awesome, handling is superb and the ride is remarkably solid and rattle-free. I spent way too much time detailing the engine, but now it looks as good as it runs, and this is the only British car in my workshop that doesn’t leak! The “mild steel†exhaust system is quite solid and has that great TR6 sound. The bumpers are really nice and have those cool over-riders. Note the exhaust discoloration on the left of the rear over-rider and several garage dings on the doors and fenders. The Saffron paint job shines like a new penny, and while very presentable, is probably as old as the car.I am so sure that this is the best Triumph TR6 on eBay that it is being offered at NO RESERVE!
