June 2017: Replace clutch linkage, shift coupling kit, shifter bushing kits Evolve Motors and Chicago Car Club are pleased to present this 1971 VW Westfalia! This lovely Type 2 was sold new in Chicago at Nelson-McGawn VW to a gentleman from South Dakota, who owned it until at least 1981, as that’s where the South-Dakota-based stamps in the original maintenance record booklet end. The next record we have of the bus was when it was purchased by a woman in Steamboat Village, Colorado in 1992, who kept the bus until 2004. The Colorado-based owner was very enthusiastic about it, having held the bus near-and-dear to her heart for a number of years. When she sold it, she left a note in it describing her experience with the bus; she had crossed the country in it several times, attended hundreds of music festivals, and even lived in it for a few years in the 90s. “Every piece of her [the bus] has sunshine in it.” It’s the perfect VW Bus story really, a camper used as intended for decades then sold to an appreciative owner who paid to have it restored to it’s 1970s glory. We’re selling this bus on behalf of it’s owner, who commissioned a restoration of the van just two years ago. During that time, the engine was fully rebuilt by a long-time VW specialist in Kansas, using all new parts with the exception of the block, which was machined and bored out. A fresh coat of the correct Savannah Beige was applied, and the interior was gone through and replaced in its entirety. This Type 2 is in exactly the condition we’d want it, restored but not quite concours-level. It’s definitely “clean” and show-worthy, but not so outrageously mint that you’d be hesitant to take it out camping. The Exterior: Savannah Beige is one of our favorite colors on Type 2s and looks just perfect against the white bumpers and pop-top. As you’d expect, considering paint was done less than two years ago, paint shows extremely well. There are very few signs of age. Blemishes, or imperfections rather, include a small scuff on the step into the cabin on the driver’s side, slightly visible paint run on the white rear bumper, yellowing on the underside of the rear bumper from the tailpipe, and a handful of small, very minor chips scattered about. There is no body damage or door dings. All chrome is mirror-like and close-to-new, including mirrors, door handles, window trim, light trim, and hubcaps. All glass and lights are clear and crack free, though the front left fog light lens does have some glue holding one of the screws in. Pop-top from GoWesty is in excellent shape. Tires are brand new Hankooks, dated 2017. The Interior: With the exception of the original seatbelts, the interior is just about entirely new. Really the only imperfection in the interior is one crack on the dash, which is on the inside of the passenger-side dash handle. Interior items, including seats, carpeting, and curtains, were sourced from SewFind. All interior wood is new as well, and are the correct VW units with VW ID tags in place. The excess of wood in the interior looks great with the beige and white exterior. Tan leatherette seats show no wear and are very comfortable, very doable for a long road trip. Interior is loaded with useful camping bits – a sink, fridge, two three-pronged 110-125V outlets, a fold-out table, two bench seats, a removable stool, and a large cushion in the back that allows the rear bench seat to fold flat into a full-size bed. There’s also a cot rolled up into the pop-top, a hammock that mounts over the front seats and is large enough for a dog or child to sleep on, and bug nets the button up to the sliding door and rear hatch. There is plenty of storage space inside too; there’s shelved storage lining the passenger side rear cargo area, as well as large storage spots under the rear seats. All gauges and interior lights are functional. The radio, while re-wired earlier this year, is not currently functioning. Under the Hood / Under the Car: While the odometer reads 48,640 miles, the 1641cc air-cooled H4 was thoroughly rebuilt by a specialist in Kansas less than 1,000 miles ago, who has been working with air-cooled Volkswagens for over thirty years. Clutch is new, and this bus has seen multiple services in the last couple years. This Type 2 feels absolutely excellent on the road. No tendencies or noises of concern whatsoever. Suspension is nice and cushy, and floats right over speedbumps. Brakes are great. The car tracks straight under both acceleration and braking. Shifts from the 4-speed manual gearbox are nice and smooth. Underneath, the car looks quite good. All structural components are rock solid. Floors are in great shape. There is some surface rust on various suspension components, but it’s all very minor and no rust is through. The Final Assessment: This Type 2 has been tastefully restored and updated to be the ideal weekend driver and camper. It is well-documented, and will come with the original owners manual, maintenance record booklet, and about a dozen service receipts outlining the work completed during the current owner’s ownership.
