Description of 1984 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon L |
After a few years, quite a bit of tears, lots of laughs and about as much gas, it's time to let go of my precious Vanagon. I've had this van for over 2 years, and I've loved every minute of it. The list of new parts/upgrades is almost too long for me to even remember, but fortunately, I have service records from both previous owners, dating back to the early 90's!! In addition to those records, I have a personal laundry list of work that I've done myself: New suspension (down to the bushings) that means shocks, struts, control arms, bushings, boots, tires, etc. (ALL NEW RUBBER!!) New fuel pump, pressure regulator, filter & lines (10k miles) New radiator, hoses and water pump (10k miles) New master & slave cylinders (clutch) New clutch and re-pin shifter (2k miles) New brake rotors and pads (2k miles) New throttle cable (10k miles) New ignition New spark plugs (literally 3 days old) New distributor & cables New battery (5k miles) New alternator (10k miles) New starter New valve covers & gaskets (2k miles) New rear axles (5k miles) New headlamps & accessory lights New dash lights New Coolant level sensor New temp ii sensor New exhaust (cat back) (10k miles) New windshield wipers Oil changed every 4,000 miles Coolant flushed 10k miles ago Levels consistently maintained Seriously so many new parts, and the majority of what I've listed here was done by me, and the other certified tech's at Eurozone Motors in Los Angeles (specializing in VW and other Euro imports) Let's move to the aesthetic dept. New bumpers New corner caps for bumpers New 14" General Grabber AT Tires Yakima Roof Rack Custom built futon style bed Custom fit 6 drawer dresser Hardwood laminate flooring LED accent interior lighting Kenwood Stereo Head Unit w/ Alpine front speakers Rear-heater delete kit (to avoid what's notorious for leaking) Now onto the negatives: Small rust spot under rear driver side window (easy day job) Small rust spot under passenger side front windshield Coolant level sensor &/or wiring is fouled, and level/temp warning light in dash is constantly flashing (definitely an electrical issue) The odometer stopped counting at 182,XXX. I have ballparked it since then - assuming that the odometer was correct when I purchased the van (march of 2016) it currently has a little more than 200,000 miles on the original motor and tranny. (side note, the gear oil was changed when I purchased the van, so 15k miles or so ago) Ok, that's all I can think of, but I am positive I'm leaving stuff out. If you want to ask me more, just give me a buzz. Happy hunting!! |
