Description of 1970 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Convertible |
A WORK IN PROGRESS A 1970 Volkswagen Convertible, last year for the standard beetle, acquired in an estate sale. It appears that a lot of progress had been made in its restoration and then it sat indoors, undercover, for a period of time prior to my ownership. I am not an expert on these VWs but I can see where floor pans have been replaced and some body repairs done (as noted by the grey primer on body panels on the left side of the body. The fenders had been off at some point as they are partially reinstalled and new fender welting is included for the fenders that need it. The fender lighting also needs to be reconnected. A limited supply of VW related items came with my purchase and will be included with the sale of this convertible. Please don’t ask for a detailed list…they are free with the purchase, a gift of sorts. Everything that I have looked at appears to be either original or replaced, I assume by the prior owner. The engine has been rebuilt and never run until I had it installed to make this a running, driving car. The dual port heads are brand new as are the pistons and other internal components so I was told. It also has an alternator and an aftermarket performance two bbl carburetor. It runs quite well. The clutch and pressure plate are new as are the throw out bearing, starter motor, muffler, heater boxes and more. I had the driveline completed to insure that the transaxle and related components were up to standard which they seem to be. It runs down the road, shifts as designed and steers well. The car comes with, I think, everything needed to complete the restoration process. The interior is new and complete as is the convertible top and headliner. The tires are new and it appears that the brake parts are as well. The bumpers are spotless and there are new door sill trim pieces to be installed. The remaining issues include some wiring and brake bleeding and adjustment on all wheels. In addition, the A pillar was repaired at some point and the driver’s door needs adjustment or tweaking to get it to close properly. I am not a body man so I haven’t tried a repair. I have also been told that he chassis needs to have reinforcement rails installed to provide additional support to the convertible floor pan. They are readily available at internet based VW supply stores such as www.jbugs.com (part# 151801131-132) for around $325 which included shipping. They apparently bolt to the undercarriage in the area of the heater channels. I think this car is a worthwhile project given the completeness of the project so far, the parts included to finish the project (I think everything is there but can’t guarantee that) and the value of these famous bugs once the project is complete. I don’t think there is that much left to do but you are probably a better judge of that than I am. I have told you what I know and invite one and all to come look it over and hear it run. Look the pictures over (they are hi-res so enlarge them) and ask as many questions as you would like. You will be buying this in an as-is condition and without a warranty of any kind. The New Hampshire title is clear and I will assist your transporter in any reasonable way. Shipping will be your responsibility of course. My feedback speaks for itself over the past 19 years on eBay. My honesty is something that I take very seriously. The car is advertised elsewhere so I do reserve the right to end the auction at any time. I require a nonrefundable deposit of $500 via PayPal within 24 hours of the auction end and balance of payment within 7 days via cash or wire transfer. No other method of payment will be accepted.
