Description of 1978 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon

Meet Beverly, she is a 1978 Volkswagen Bus Riviera Camper. She has been in the family for almost 20 years and given us many great camp and road trips. She runs and drives, but is need of some TLC to restore her to her former glory.

The GOOD- Starts up, runs and drives. The van has been in the family for the last 20 years or so. In the last 4 years I have driven it about 3000 miles and during that time it has been given a fuel pump, fuel lines, alternator, battery, vacuum hoses. The brakes pads and shoes were also replaced. The interior is in good condition with no rips or tears in the interior. The backseat bed works and the pop up camper tent is in fair condition with a few small tears here and there. The body has no major dents or accident damage. The engine had a full rebuild back in 2005.

The BAD- As mentioned it runs and drives, BUT currently it does not stop very well. I have not inspected, but I suspect a wheel cylinder or the master cylinder is bad as the brake pedal is squishy when pressed. The engine needs a new cold start valve as it takes several cranks to prime the engine when cold, it starts right up when the engine is warm. The engine also leaks oil (only when running) the local VW mechanic suspects the rear main seal needs replaced, but the engine would need to be dropped to confirm.
The UGLY- Rust. There are a few areas of rust. The two worst are the area below the front windshield and on the roof in the back. There is also some rust on gutter rails and the floorboards. Also it needs new rubbers seals on windows and some doors.
