1964 Volvo 220 Wagon

Comprehensive restoration
Excellent mechanicals, upgrades
B20 motor - M41 overdrive transmission

Here up for bids on eBay is this dialed in 1964 Volvo wagon. A California car from new, this 122 came to Oregon in 1998 when it was sold to a very knowledgeable and well respected Volvo guru here in Portland. He set about transforming it into an excellent road car as well as performing a full cosmetic restoration. Now 18 years later the car is starting to show some patina, but remains at the top of its game mechanically, just a super driving example in spite of a few visual blems.

The car was taken completely apart for the repaint, glass out and all trim off. The color of Cherry Red was applied both inside and out, there's no trace of the previous color anywhere. The stock wheels were widened to 6", they're now wearing new BF Goodrich T/A's in 205/60R15 with about 10 miles on them.

The car shows some areas of rust bubbling, the most serious being on the bottom of the tailgate, visible in the 1st photo below. The other areas are limited to small single bubbles here and there on the lower body, not a big cause for concern but definitely not perfect. However, the undercarriage of the car is completely rust free and original, photos are shown at the bottom of the page.
All windows seals and sweeps were replaced during the restoration and are still in great shape, and all of the glass is in very good condition.

I just had a new windshield professionally installed last week with a factory Volvo replacement, along with a new seal and molding set. Headlights are E-code Cibies wired through control relays. The 5W "city light" bulbs alternate in time with the turn signal bulbs when blinking, a nice touch.

Pretty sharp appearance in spite of its flaws. Bumpers are straight but show some light fading to the chrome. There's no pitting on these or any of the other brightwork on the car.

The interior was completely redone and features a 123GT dash pad, tach, and rare steering wheel. The front seats are heated, from a late model 240 with accessory padded headrests. Pre-1963 front door uppers were installed, a painted set of plain uppers are included if you prefer that look. The car has 3-point seatbelts in the front and lap belts in the back. On the left of the dash is rare, dealer accessory hazard switch. A custom black cut-pile carpet set finishes things off.

All gauges and controls operate correctly, the only deviation from stock are programmable intermittent wipers, on a Volvo switch. Tachometer is functional, heater and fan work great, and the correct indicator light for the overdrive has been installed. Good quality Alpine stereo and Alpine speakers, with AM/FM, CD, MP3, plus iPod and thumb-drive capabilities through a USB port.

The upper tailgate support has been converted to a gas strut, the assembly is easy to open with one hand if you're carrying a bag of groceries. Factory spare and tool kit, containing vintage OE Volvo tools.

Back seat is original, headliner has been replaced. 2 stock dome lights are used, they are wired through relays on a time delay, another nice touch to this build.

New door panels. Windows all wind smoothly, locks all work.

The car is running a B20F motor from a '72 140, it starts easily and runs beautifully, this is a great driving car. Lots of upgrades here, including a dual-line master cylinder, 1968-style steering box with collapsible column and poly coupler bearings, Bosch alternator conversion, Pertronix electronic ignition in a Philbin-built 007 Bosch distributor, and a Bosch blue coil mounted in stock location.

Custom inscribed battery hold down bracket and box. 3-bolt SU carburetors with a very rare HS-6 correct cold air box. These carbs were rebuilt by the wizards at ZTherapy and carry a lifetime warranty. They're mounted on an aluminum intake manifold, IPD headers are below. All of these receipts and more are present in the big mountain of paper you see in the 4th photo below. They cover everything from the restoration, and go back to 1986 with the previous owner in California.

The upgrades continue with the undercarriage; the car features IPD sport coils and sway bars front and rear, renewed front bushings, ball joints, tie rods and idler arm, plus Bilstein shocks on all corners. The front brakes have been updated to discs with braided stainless flex lines. A 2.25" exhaust was installed through a Dynomax muffler with side exit. The rear end was rebuilt, it's a Dana-Spicer Type 30 axle with 4.10 gears. Rebuilt driveline with new u-joints, hanger limit straps and poly bushings.
