Description of 1969 Volvo Other 1800S, GT Coupe |
Up for Auction is a Rare Swedish Built Garage Find! This is a 1969 Volvo 1800S GT Coupe 1 of just 1693; making this automobile a member of the rarest year of production for the Volvo 1800 GT. AUCTIONED WITH A VERY LOW RESERVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1800 VEHICLE BACKGROUND The Volvo 1800 is a two-passenger, front-engine, rear-drive sports car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars as a coupe and shooting-brake. While the P1800 was more of a stylish touring car rather than a sports car when it came to its speed capabilities, the P1800 first became popular when it was featured as the main car driven by Roger Moore in the hit television series The Saint which aired from 1962-1969. The Volvo P1800 received prominence in the early 60's when a white 1962 Volvo P1800 with number plate ST1 was driven by the character Simon Templar (Roger Moore) in the hit TV series The Saint (1962-69). When asked to name his favorite "movie car" many years later, Moore said it was the Volvo P1800, commenting: "I have a great affection for the Volvo P1800, as, of course, I owned one, as well as used one in the series. It's a beautiful car and I still drive a Volvo to this day." A 1966 Volvo 1800S and its owner Irv Gordon of East Patchogue, New York, USA own the Guinness world record for highest mileage. On April 2, 2002, Gordon and his 1800S were guests on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, after reaching the two million miles mark. In January 2011 Gordon and his Volvo were featured on PBS's Nova Science Now and in November 2011 in Hemmings Sports & Exotic Magazine. In June 2013, when the car had reached a little over 2,996,000 miles, VCNA launched an unprecedented PR campaign valuing the performance and in September 2013 the car surpassed the 3 million miles mark in Alaska. 1969 1800S GT ENHANCEMENTS OVER PREVIOUS YEARS Some fine improvements occurred for the 1969 model. In 1969, the B18 engine was replaced with the 2-litre B20B variant of the B20 giving 118bhp (87kW), though it kept the designation 1800S. Also in 1969, side marker lenses were added at each fender on cars for the U.S. market. The cars were fitted with a B20 series engine with Stromberg carburetors. The steering was equipped with a collapsible shaft and a larger brake booster. A dual line was also added to the existing front disc and rear drum brakes. VEHICLE CONDITION This Volvo 1800 S 1969 has a color code #94, and still retains its green original color, although faded with patina, which is consistent with other California autos and vehicles that are nearly fifty years old. The vehicle is an unrestored garage find and since the owner passed away and the car went into probate in California, very little is known about the vehicle's past. I purchased several vehicles from his estate. The interior is the two tone, black and tan. The interior is mostly intact. The trim appears to be all there except for the drivers side door interior cover. The rear seat appears almost new while the front seats appear to be original, although the front bucket seats' leather has split, it can be covered or repaired or driven as is. The radio was removed before I purchased the vehicle but some after factory speakers remain. There is some rust in the very bottom of the lower rear quarter panels and at the car's edges. There is a spare tire in the trunk and some extra parts in a box marked 1969S. The rear passenger tire has a slow leak and will be replaced before the auction ends. All of the glass is intact and appears to be original. Mechanically, the car is a bit of a time capsule, save the new battery and cables, spark plugs, and main distributor wire. We were able to push start the car and we believe that it needs a new starter or the starter wiring or ground. The gears shift as they should and it drives well with power. However the brakes are soft and should be bled or examined to determine what is needed to repair them. All in all, a solid California 1969 GT that appears to need little to get it established as a daily driver. The car will be sold with Probate Records from the Estate to receive a title from the State of California and also related records from the County where the vehicle was sold to me. I can assist you to obtain the title from the State as the Probate County records are legal documents provided to obtain the title. The car load easily and we can assist you to load upon a trailer.
