Description of 1982 AMC Eagle SX4

This is an extremely rare original car in good shape with many valuable parts that needs someone to do the work to keep it on the road and/or continue restoration. It runs and can be driven a very short distance for a test drive, but anything beyond that is not advised due to the work that needs to be done (see below).

We are the third owners. I bought it for my son on a farm in South Dakota. It made the drive home just fine with no issues. My Dad and I were going to help with ongoing repairs and partial restoration. My dad got sick and we just don’t have the time or knowledge to continue working on this car and my son needs a dependable daily driver. My son drove it on and off for about a year while making smaller repairs, etc. and then the timing gear broke. We haven't driven it much since having the gear replaced by a mechanic due to the CV axles also needing to be replaced and not wanting to invest any more into the vehicle. It starts up just fine every couple weeks.

The car was repainted by the first owner. It was originally light blue. The body is in very good shape with some very minor scratches, dents, dings and a very small amount of cracking and chipped paint. We found, repaired, painted and replaced all 4 plastic bumper extensions. All the paint has a nice shine and the car looks great! The engine compartment is very clean and has very little surface rust. The car does unfortunately have significant surface rust underneath and one actual rust hole approximately 6-8 inches wide on the drivers side floor plan. We did a rough fix by welding in a good used floor pan from another car on that side but it needs proper replacement long term and rust prevention undercoating sprayed on much of the underside of the car. There are no other significant holes and just surface rust at this point everywhere else.

The black interior is in excellent shape other than the sun visors which are loose and rotate down sometimes and thus need to be repaired. There are no cracks in the dash or any of the seats at all and the carpet isn’t faded. The headliner and door panels are in great shape. There are just a couple minor tears in the carpet. The inside is exceptionally clean and well cared for.

It has the 151CI Iron Duke (GM) 4 cylinder motor with 5 speed manual transmission. The car runs a little rough since the timing gear was replaced and likely needs the timing adjusted. It drives ok but can be a bit sluggish at higher speeds. If you are familiar with these you know they always run rough and were under-powered but very dependable motors other than the timing gear issue which has just been resolved. The Select Drive switches to 4 Wheel Drive just fine. It needs new CV axles and just recently developed a new grinding sound related to motion that likely needs to be researched and fixed (could be wheel bearings). The carburetor was completely rebuilt a year ago. Everything works except the tach and the radio. The tires have a lot of tread left. It will need a new battery..

We have replaced all the following with brand new parts in the last year:

  • Alternator and belts
  • Radiator (including thermostat and hoses)
  • Spark plug wires (including plugs)
  • Distributor cap, rotor, pickup coil and electronic chip
  • Fog Lights (new Hella)
  • Parking brake cables
  • Clutch fluid reservoir
  • Lug Nuts
  • Hatch lift supports

We have reproduction factory shop manuals and a number of spare parts including 1 hub cap, grill, headlight bezels, body trim, select-drive switch, door handles and gauge cover.

Feel free to email with any questions or more specific pictures, etc. Again the car runs and can be driven, but I would strongly discourage driving it any substantial distance and recommend using a trailer or towing it from our location. Local pickup or arranged shipping will be required. We are located just west of Denver (suburb). I am happy to help as needed. We just really want to find a good home for this great car!

Thanks for looking!
