Description of 1973 Chevrolet Other Vega

For sale is a non-modified 1973 Vega GT Kammback Wagon with original 4-cylinder 140 cubic inch engine and 3 speed manual transmission.
What a conversation starter! I bought this car as a daily driver, around town parts getter. Young people want to know what it is and older folk are astonished to see a Vega on the road! I can't stop at a gas station without someone telling me a Vega story - some good...some bad, but Chevrolet made over two million of these and few people have seen one on the road in the last 20 years.
This one is a good 20-footer. The previous owner was very proud of her own paint job, but it was not sanded out or buffed and shows orange peel and poor preparation and masking. If I kept it I would have to paint it again to get it right and I just don't want to take time away from my current project ('32 Chevy roadster) to do that.
Because I expected that I would paint it, I have purchased all new weatherstripping for both doors and lift gate. The car is kind of rattle-ly going down the road now because the old weatherstripping is absent completely on the passenger side door and I'm not going to install the new stuff until after paint. Same thing with the weatherstripping (cat whiskers) for the door glass. I have new, but the door glass really rattles now. Interior door panels and panels in the cargo area are loose, but why take the chance of stripping out the fasteners by tightening them up now?
For the pictures, I just placed the emblems to show I had them all. They are not installed, again pending paint work.
This car, as is, will not embarrass you running down the road, but really should be block sanded to get rid of the small dings and orange peel and then repainted.
The car was represented to me as a rust-free South Carolina car. I bought it in Ohio, but previous title was in SC. "Rust free" and "Vega" are seldom seen in the same sentence. I grew up in the salt-laden northeast, so I know perceptions of "rust free" are different. Where I grew up, if the front fenders weren't flapping like wings, it was rust free.
The bubbles shown in the photo of the back side of the drivers side rear fender are representative of both sides in front of and behind the wheel openings. Please look at these bubbles carefully.
This car is a three speed. I have a four speed transmission that will go with it and I have a couple of shifters for the four speed. One of the shifters is missing the reverse lock out rod.
The car runs well. I installed a rebuilt carburetor. Brakes are good. Lights all work properly. Glass is all good. Chrome is good driver quality. Bumpers are straight. Grill is good. Tires are good, but were on the car when I bought it so I'm not sure about their age.
Mileage is unknown. I've replaced the speedometer twice to try to find one where both odometer and speedometer work. Some previous owner installed an external (outside the gas tank) electric fuel pump and now the fuel gage does not work. Currently the odometer works and the speedometer is intermittent and I use the odometer to keep track of when to buy gas. The tachometer works fine. Temp gage works. Car does not overheat.
The dash pad is rough. The front seats are comfortable for me, but in bad shape under Betty Boop seats covers. The back seat is in good shape. Carpet in the cargo area is missing. Spare tire and wheel missing. No rust in cargo area and spare tire well. The car had air conditioning from the factory, but that is long gone. The AM/FM radio does not work.
I removed the original roof rack and plugged the holes, and have more plugs to use after painting. Rack included if you want it.
I've tried to list everything Negative I can think of about the car.
The positives are that it still a 43 year old used car that is fun to drive and presentable on the road.
I encourage anyone interested in the car to inspect it and drive it before bidding. Car is located about 10 miles east of Shreveport, LA. Clear title in my name. I prefer cash on pick up, but in any case, neither car nor title will be released until I am satisfied with payment. Obviously, there is no warranty expressed or implied. If you bid and buy it without first inspecting and driving it, I will not be sympathetic to complaints later.
For more information, call Tom at 318-949-9744, but be prepared to leave a message and I'll call back. Please, no calls after 9 PM central time. We tend to not answer calls from numbers not known to us. There are way too many telemarketers and pollsters calling this time of year.
I will not be involved in making any arrangements for international shipping. Buyer is responsible for pick up or transportation within the US.
$500 deposit required within two days of auction end. Winner should contact me within that time to discuss final payment and pick up.
Thanks.
