Description of 1971 Datsun Other

1971 Datsun 240Z Series 1

5-Speed Manual, 70k miles

VIN: HLS30-14408

I have never been able to confirm the number on the engine because I forgot to ask the mechanics when they tuned it to check, and I cannot get down there to see it. The mileage last I drove it was in the upper 60,000s but I don't remember exactly (and the battery is dead currently, see below). A previous owner installed wide tires with aftermarket rims— I have never had the original rims or tires.

I am selling it because we need the money more than I need a classic car. I bought the car from an owner in California, where it had been for several years if I'm remembering the maintenance records correctly. Before that it was in Oregon where it had been shipped from Japan. I've done a bit to it since I bought it to the east coast in 2019:

  • New battery
  • New battery terminals
  • New spark plugs
  • Mishimoto 2-row aluminum radiator installed
  • New electric inline fuel pump (10psi, 34gph)
  • Some hoses and clamps showing age were replaced before failure
  • Black dash cover to protect the original dash
  • Speedhut gauges (originals are boxed in the trunk area)
    • Blue backlighting that makes it easy to see during the daytime and not overly bright at night
    • Water temp, tachometer, and oil temp are on the center dash
    • Speedometer goes up to 160mph w/ GPS, can track lap times
  • Original wiring beneath the dash that had melted over the years was repaired
  • Original center console replaced with a refurbished one (original stored and goes w/ sale)
  • New wiper motor installed (look up the Datsun wiper motor hack online)
  • Choke cables straightened and lubed
  • New headlights installed for night driving safety
  • Removed some headlight covers installed by the previous owner
  • Replaced the shifter knob installed by the previous owner with a wood-style one
  • Engine tuned by a performance shop

Here are the issues I've identified:

  • It has sat for several months so it needs gas and the battery needs a jump
  • Front right rim: center part is dented/surface rusted
  • There is a short in the wiring, causing the exterior lights and signals to not work. I stopped driving it when I noticed this and then attempted to trace the issue but since I'm not a mechanic or electrician, stopped while I was ahead and could not afford to pay a mechanic to trace it again
  • The original color was BLUE. The red paint is showing signs of aging and the car needs a repaint. It has orange peel and rust in a few areas
  • A previous owner installed a steering stabilizer at some point
  • A previous owner coated the chrome around the windows with black...paint? I don't know why they did it but I made sure it comes off easily, simply never made it a priority

My original intention was to restore the interior to as close to factory as possible with minor alterations (like the Speedhut gauges), then to remove the wide-body panels and replace them with originals as well and only drive it on weekends. It has a clean California title ready to be handed over. I have lots of maintenance documentation all the way from when it first came into the United States to now. It still has an original key chain from the dealership that received it from the port. Everything I have from and for the vehicle goes with the sale.

If you have any questions, please ask. I'll do my best to answer you as quickly as possible.
