Description of 1965 Ford Mustang

1964.5 Mustang coupe D-code 4bbl 289

The Ford Mustang, two-seat, id-engine sports car, s officially unveiled by Henry Ford II at the World's Fair in Flushing Meadows, ew York, n April 17, 964. That same day, he new car also debuted in Ford showrooms across America and almost 22,000 Mustangs were immediately snapped up by buyers. Named for a World War II fighter plane, he Mustang was the first of a type of vehicle that came to be known as a "pony car." Ford sold more than 400,000 Mustangs within its first year of production, ar exceeding sales expectations.

The Mustang was conceived as a "working man's Thunderbird," according to Ford. The first models featured a long hood and short rear deck and carried a starting price tag of around $2,300. Ford general manager Lee Iacocca, ho became president of the company in October 1964 (and later headed up Chrysler, hich he was credited with reviving in the 1980s) was involved in the Mustang's development and marketing. The car's launch generated great interest. It was featured on the covers of Newsweek and Time magazines and the night before it went on sale, he Mustang was featured in commercials that ran simultaneously on all three major television networks. One buyer in Texas reportedly slept at a Ford showroom until his check cleared and he could drive his new Mustang home. The same year it debuted, he Mustang appeared on the silver screen in the James Bond movie "Goldfinger."

Up for sale is a 1964 1/2 Mustang. This car was produced only a week after the first Mustang was sold. This car is a D code, hich is a 289 topped off with a 4bbl carburetor. It doesn't get much better than that from the factory!

This car can be purchase now, estored and enjoyed this summer. Most, f not all, f the remaining items can be completed in your garage! You can customize this car to your liking! This is the perfect project car that can be completed in a reasonable amount of time. Now is your chance to own a prime example of one of the early Mustangs that started it all!

I do not have the door tag for the car, ut some sleuthing shows the following details:

-The build date is approximately April 23, 964. The nearest preceeding coupe in the Mustang Production Guide shows a build date of April 23, 964.

-The car was red when I received it, o signs of any other colors (inside trunk, nder dash, nside quarters, owl area, tc.) so it is my assumption this is an original red car.

-The car was originally an automatic as the "knockout" for the clutch rod in the firewall is still in place, o nuts for the equilizer bar mount, s well as the car coming with an auto brake pedal assembly.

-The car originally had power steering, s the nuts for the power steering ram bracket are in the frame as well as an Eaton power steering pump assembly in the trunk.

-It was an original drum brake car as the pedal assembly was set up for manual brakes as well as correctly date coded drum brakes on the car.

Sheetmetal
This is a solid car! The previous owner did all the rust repair on the car, o I started off with a solid foundation.

3 of the 4 aprons in the engine bay are original with the vin still stamped in them.

The battery apron and radiator support have been changed. The radiator support must be off another 64.5 as it has the large louvers to cool off the battery of the early generator cars. To the best of my knowledge these are not being reproduced.

Paint
The car has been painted Lipstick Red with DuPont base coat and quality clear
!

The interior of the car was wire wheeled and coated with POR-15.

Interior of floorpans also undercoated for added protection

Underside painted with single stage urethane black. Undercoating was "freshened" up where needed.

Engine bay painted with semi-gloss black urethane

Drivetrain

The engine in the car was rebuilt when I purchased it. It had never been ran since being rebuilt. It had sat for a number of years. I took it apart and put it back together and freshened up the assembly lube and double checked all the gaskets and replaced them where necessary.

It is an early 5 bolt style 289 with date code 4F19.

The intake is a 1965 4bbl intake. Casting number C5AE-9425-M with a date code of 4K21.

Water pump appeared to be new as it was installed on the rebuilt engine.

The exhaust manifolds were sandblasted and coated with Eastwood's exhaust manifold coating. Exhaust system is a new Thrush dual exhaust with a new H-pipe

New distributor, ires (concourse correct wires), park plugs, nd yellow top coil.

New alternator and Carter fuel pump.

Carburetor is a rebuilt Holly 600cfm with vacuum secondary and electric choke.

Valve covers were sandblasted and painted.

New air filter assembly with gold colored bottom.

New radiator hoses and cap. Radiator is not new but doesn't leak.

I purchased a 5 bolt style bellhousing and spacer plate to adapt to a 1965 C4 transmission (I have not driven the car and my recommendation would be to have the transmission rebuilt).

The car has its driveshaft and original rear end in place

I purchased an "underhood" bolt kit as well as OEM style bolts for the water pump, lternator, il pan.

New washer pump and bag (remaing parts of kit will be included).

Steering and brakes
I will include the Eaton power steering pump with the vehicle. I have what I believe is the correct center link to the vehicle as well as the power steering valve and cylinder.

I would plan on replacing tie rods or even installing a rack and pinion steering system if this is going to be a driver!

I have installed a pair of Granada disk brake spindles on the car as I was planning on disk brakes.

The steering box feels smooth and there is an original style steering wheel.

Fuel System
I have included a used fuel tank. For piece of mind you could install a new gas tank or fuel cell (for safety)
.

Interior
The interior has been painted semi-gloss back so you can easily pick up where we left off.

The seats are in good condition. They could be recovered with the covers of your choice (black, ed, ony, tc.)

The headliner is new as are the front and rear window seals.

The instrument cluster looks to be in good condition. Most of the other interior parts can be replaced with new as they are readily available and reasonably priced (instrument bezel, love box door, ash pad, tc.).

Exterior
New rubber seals on front and rear windows. New trunk seal.

New windshield and OEM rear glass. OEM door glass, uarter windows, nd vent wings included.

Quarter window regulators are included but door regulators will need to be purchased new (after 50 years of use, ost original ones are junk anyway)

New exterior door handles. I have included both door latches, ut you would probably be better off purchasing new as after 50 years of use, hey can become unreliable.

Used front and rear bumpers but all bumper brackets are included

Used grille emblem but a billet grille panel could be installed if desired.

Good original hood hinges

Wheels
Car has a set of Mag 500s that are probably not useable. Although all tires hold air. I do have a set of 14" steel wheels but they do not clear the Granada spindles. This is one of the easiest ways to change the looks of this car!

Electrical
New headlights

I have included the original underdash wiring harness which appears to be in really good condition. I didn't notice any splices or cut wires.

A used headlight harness is included as well.

Vin
3 original aprons have the vin stamped on them.

I have a clean title in my name.

The door tag is available from Marti, f desired

Value

Rust free V8 coupe shell - $4k+

Rebuilt engine - $3-4k

Paint job - $4k+

The value of the parts far outweigh the asking price of the car. This is an excellent opportunity to own one of the first Mustangs off the assembly line!
