They even appear to possibly be the second set of tires installed on the coupe. how cool is that?! This two door sedan has obviously been preserved to a high standard over the past 93 years and it shows. Toted as “America’s First Car. Haynes beat Ford to the punch. Mr. Haynes was quite industrious and if you read up on him. you will find that he was also the inventor of stainless steel. This beautiful piece of American history comes with a story that just continues to live on! This wonderful Haynes 75 Brougham was bought in 1921 by the Waldschmidt-Butts Motor Company in Arkansas City. Kansas. The Waldschmidt-Butts Motor Company was owned and operated by Sam Waldschmidt and Elmer Butts of Arkansas City. It was located at 610 South Summit Street. Waldschmidt built the two-story concrete building himself. The men repaired all kinds of vehicles. from cars to tractors. and in front of the building was a gas station. It was the first filling station with a repair shop behind it in town! Shortly after the Haynes was purchased. it was gifted to one of the men’s daughters of the dealership (See Photo!). She drove this car for a decade before the dealership decided to sell it in 1933. Well. back in 1933. no one wanted a 1921 Haynes when technology was improving by leaps and bounds nearly daily! Sadly. the Haynes never sold. Since the Haynes just kind of hung out at the dealership. it was placed in the basement. Fast forward to what we believe was the 1940s when the dealership received its post-war remodel. The Haynes was bricked off in the basement and eventually forgotten about. In 2000. the dealership received another remodel. A contractor working in the basement of the dealership by the name of David was hired to install a door in the brick wall that the Haynes was unknowingly behind. Once he cut through the wall and saw the nearly 80 year old car. he asked many questions about it. The car was bricked off and hidden for many decades and was wonderfully preserved by not being exposed to the elements! Eventually. the dealership agrees to pay David for his services by means of the Haynes and we have the paper that shows the dealership sold the car to David for $1. 00 plus any liens. David spent over $4. 00 in properly and correctly restoring the car to its original beauty and charm. Over $1. 00 went into the interior and $1. 00 into correcting the lacquer paint and ensuring its originality. It was a labor of love once he rescued the Haynes! Finished in black. the paint is in beautiful. nearly original condition. The paint is mostly original and shows thin in places. as well as some paint chips and scratches. As mentioned before. the former owner spent $1. 00 restoring the original lacquer to its original luster! The body is exceptional and looks incredible to be 93 years old! There are running boards down each side of the Haynes and they are in great shape. All of the chrome is in good condition and only shows very minor pitting from age. Overall. the exterior of the car looks phenomenal! Inside. the interior is wrapped with reupholstered gray cloth and looks extremely handsome. There are no signs of major wear or tear anywhere to be found inside! The backseat is extremely roomy and very comfy. The door panels match the interior and show no wear. tear or staining. The headliner is in great shape and shows no sign of sag to be found! The dashboard is painted black and houses an original set of gauges. The windshield is a three piece opening windshield that allows fresh air to flow into the cabin. It should be noted that the fuel gauge is currently inoperable. Overall. the interior of this coupe is in beautiful shape and shows very well! Under the side lift hood. you will find a straight 6 cylinder engine. Attached to the engine is a 3-speed manual transmission. which is shifted through the floor. The two door sedan sits upon a set of 10-spoke black wheels wrapped in the 34 x 4. 5 B. F. Goodrich Silvertown Cord tires that look great. Yes. the tires do show signs of dry rot and cracking but they do hold air and complete the original look to “America’s First Car!” The ORIGINAL Pennsylvania Cord tire is mounted on the rear of the car and looks absolutely wonderful. This little original piece of history runs great! This is a very neat. very VERY vintage Haynes 75 Brougham that would be an excellent fit for any car collector or even an awesome Sunday driver!
