Description of 1975 Porsche 914 convertible

1975 Porsche 914 1.8 22,000 miles "They are only original once" It is often said to buy the lowest mile most original car you can and pay what it takes to get it. Restoration costs most times far outweigh the price of an original car, and in addition you wind up with a non original car that too many have had their hand in repairing. Original cars are always, in the end, worth more than restored cars as well. The problem always is finding them! Here comes one: This original paint original 22,000 mile 914 1.8 was purchased new by a gentleman living in Colorado from Bob Hagestad Porsche Audi, as a base car with only a factory installed Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio, Hirschmann antenna, and Blaupunkt speaker kit as options. The man intended it to be his ski bum vehicle, able, with its mid engine, to negotiate the worst snow and road conditions, so he installed his ski rack and cb radio, and Koni shock set, and took off. Unfortunately, the Colorado roads were not the kindest, many of them being unpaved, so the car took its brunt of stone chips including two chipped windshields, but never saw any of the winter salt of the northeast. As this man was getting older, after only a few short years, the skiing stopped, the man moved to Tennessee to be with his relatives, and retired the car to the garage in 1981 where it has been sitting ever since. The man finally passed away earlier this year, and through our many connections, came to us and now to you. As we all know, sitting is the worst thing one can do to a car, and 35 years of sitting certainly did not help this 914. Hours and hours of time was spent here in the Automobile Atlanta shop doing things like flushing the fuel system, changing the fluids, lubricating the hinges and pivots, checking the valve adjust, state of tune, compression, and electrics, and cleaning the heavy dust off the car! Today, the car still maintains its full factory finish, all of its original rubber seals, brightwork, interior, its bone stock engine and transmission (never removed from the car), its factory part numbered pedal pads, un cracked dash, perfect 145 per cylinder compression, and tight tight transmission. Its flat spotted original Michelin tires bounce a bit, and the Konis, as Konis usually do, have stiffened up a bit. (we wanted to present the car in its original state, but a nice set of new Bilsteins would be an excellent upgrade. We also removed the cb radio, antenna and ski rack (the rack clamp caused slight left rear trunk lid damage, and center hole in the lid was drilled for the cb antenna lead!!!!! (the guy who did that should have been shot!) You can see in the many pictures, the original factory interior light, the original engine tin stickers, the bright instrument needles and seatbelt "press" stickers, and original air flow meter. These all attest to the originality of this 914. You will not be disappointed to add this to your collection, and with a bit of cosmetic help to touchup the original finish, will have a lasting investment (look what we just sold on e bay for 18,600, one of the most dismantled 914-6 jigsaw puzzles the world has ever seen, just to give you an idea of the investment potential!) As an after note, I dr914 think that this one must have been made on a friday by two lazy Germans. (lazy Germans??) Notice the picture of the spare bolt folded right into the factory floor pan tar, and also the vinyl trim to hide the body color at the side of the backpad, it is white!!!!!!!!!! Someone arbitrarily grabbed the trim for the factory white interior and installed it on this black interior, too lazy to go and get the black ones. The story of our ski bum and the factory assembly mistakes all give this car character and good chat for the judges after you raise the level to concours perfection! Remember, they are only original once! For those of you who do not know me, I am George Hussey president of Automobile Atlanta, who from 1978 has been buying and selling both 914s and their parts, and have devoted our life to the preservation of the car. We have the world's best 914 car collection including a rare 916, the world's best 914 catalog, have written a 914 book Tech Tips 700 which Road and Track in their review, said "no 914 owner should be without it" and make over 275 replacement parts for the car. We have a full time restoration and service facility as well. Years ago they started to call me "doctor 914" and the term stuck! I examine detailed photo shoots of potential 914 purchases for individuals daily and give them advice, and can do so for you as well with no fee what so ever. It is important to me that everyone who purchases a 914 gets a good car for the money. They are great restoration projects as they are so simple and parts readily available. With that stated, I see many many 914s sell for very high prices that are not good cars for the money, and I feel sorry for the buyers. There are vast differences between a "good" 914 and a bad one, and with restoration costs upwards of 60 thousand dollars on some of them, it pays to spend more upfront as good cars are still available. Drop me a line if you see a car you like and I will give you my 40 years in the 914 business opinion.
