Description of 1960 Austin Healey Sprite |
SEE MY OTHER AUCTIONS FOR MORE VINTAGE CAR PARTS AND ACCESSORIES Further cleanout of surplus vintage cars and parts: This is a no reserve auction and the Austin Healey will be sold on or off auction. THE STORY: Am 77 and it's time to let go of my British car collection and I don't have any rusty junk. Started about 50 years ago and the main objective was to buy one owner, original paint, rust free cars for pleasure and investment. Tough job. True original survivors were few and far between and the majority of the leftovers were pummeled to within an inch of their lives or were "weekend restored" junk, rusty beaters, money pits or overpriced trailer queens with a dubious history. An unrestored original, even though it may have faults, gives an accurate assessment of it's overall REAL condition along with plenty of time honored character (or the nauseating word "patina"). GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A California car. This 1960 Austin Healey Bugeye is one of the most rust free original California survivors I have seen. A PERFECT car for the person who has been waiting for a rust free body and chassis and wants to do the mechanicals, paint and details themselves. This is the last Bugeye in my collection and was the best of them all. Purchased from the original owners wife in California in 1991. The owner was in the process of preparing the car for repainting when he passed away. The British Heritage certificate states that it originally was an Iris blue car with blue interior and black convertible top. Built September 4th, 1960 and sent to Los Angeles California. Scroll down to see additional photos. It was a good running and driving car when put into our storage facility in 1991. It is being sold on a bill of sale - there is no title. SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE PHOTOS. PRESENT VALUE: As of this writing Hagertys classic car values the 1960 Austin Healey MK1 Bugeye Sprite at $7,400 fair, $14,000 good, $20,000 excellent and $33,800 concours. NADA Classic car value guide values the car at $8,250 low, $26,100 average and $47,500 high. The condition of this Healey in my opinion is at least good. Excellent fot the body/chassis alone. It is also of course a good investment as unlike most cars the value will more than likely increase over time. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: ENGINE: Starts and runs perfectly on the original ignition/key system. No smoke and no noises. Excellent oil pressure. Runs smooth, strong and quiet. It was recently started and run on an auxiliary fuel tank. We did not use the original fuel tank and lines for running only to cut down on time spent but the original fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, etc look to be in excellent condition. Includes all original accessories like carburetors, generator, water pump, radiator, starter, etc, etc, etc. Engine cylinders were filled in 1991 with a preservation fluid the air force uses in their rotary aircraft engines for long term storage - we never have any problems with stuck or corroded engines when using this compound under long term storage conditions. TRANSMISSION/CLUTCH: Transmission is the correct original 4 speed mated to the above engine. It shifted just fine in 1991 and should still be fine. Shift lever and gears move freely and positively throughout the entire gear range. We elected not to replace the master cylinder and slave cylinder so these would need replacing. ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Excellent original condition. Solid and straight. No rust, no damage, no modifications. Serial and body plates are correct, intact and factory original. Original wiring harness still good and useable. Everything original is there. Heater, radiator, horn, sway bar, shocks, etc. Original hood locking mechanism is there and works. Check the condition of the front frame rail extensions - they are completely solid and undamaged - highly unusual for a Bugeye. TRUNK COMPARTMENT: Well, there is no "trunk" but the huge space behind the seats is solid, unrusted and California original. SHEET METAL BODY PANELS/CHASSIS: Again, a California car - it doesn't get much better. No rust seen anywhere. There are a couple of areas on the left front headlight and the rear deck of the body where an amateur attempt with body filler was used - but on dents only - not rust. Check out the photos of the underside of the car and the floors - NO rust - all original and in excellent condition. EXTERIOR BODY PARTS: Bugeyes have very little in chrome dress up parts but what is there is original and in useable condition. Tail lights, grille, headlights, etc. GLASS: The original windshield is good and unbroken/cracked. The original side curtains are there but will need new plexiglass. INTERIOR/Upholstery: A redo for the interior is in order - fortunately the Bugeyes have a very Spartan interior - an easy and inexpensive job. One seat is missing a cushion. DASH AREA: Dash board, instruments, steering wheel are the originals and in good condition. Working are: Tachometer, speedometer, water temperature, oil pressure, windshield wipers, ignition switch, headlights. Not working are the turn signals and horn. Dash face will need to be recovered in vinyl. TOP: Good original top bows. Convertible top needs replacing. PAINT: There is one old cheap red repaint over the original Iris blue factory paint. Can be used as it stands but what is left of the red paint is in horrible condition. TIRES & WHEELS: Five original 13" wheels in good condition. Tires are for holding air for shuttling only. EXHAUST: Very good original stock exhaust system - sounds like a good healthy Sprite should sound. SUSPENSION AND BRAKES: Suspension is all original and intact. We elected not to replace any brake system hydraulics so a new master cylinder and wheel cylinders would probably need fitting. MISCELLANEOUS: There is no tonneau cover. The odometer reading is 65412. I cannot confirm it's accuracy but it is probably pretty close. PAPERWORK: A Georgia bill of sale, current Georgia State Police inspection certificate and the British Heritage certificate come with the car. THERE IS NO TITLE. FACTORY ID PLATES: The Vehicle identification ID plate, body plate and engine number are intact. The vehicle serial plate number is AN5L-46682. The engine plate number is 9CUH38575. INSPECTION OF CAR: It is difficult at best to describe something as complex as a vehicle and it is recommended that you personally inspect the car or have a 3rd party inspect it for you. I can acomodate anyone to show them the car. It is described to the best of my ability along with many good photos. I have sold roughly 25 autos through ebay over the past 19 years with 100 percent buyer feedback satisfaction. SHIPPING: I have shipped many cars to all parts of the world over the years. The car is in a secure place at my home and can be collected there. I can assist with loading. The car can stay here for up to 30 days from the close of the auction.
