Description of 1964 Chevrolet Other Pickups Fleetside K20 long bed

May 19th 1964 my Father and I drove to Citizens Chevrolet in Eagle Rock. California to special order this truck. This was my Dads dream at age 44 to get this 4WD Chevy and take a trip to South America where he was born in Brazil in 1920. He and a best friend took that trip but only got as far as Central America as their time ran out at 62 days on the road. and in 1965 they had to make many of their OWN roads. Here are the items on the truck that he special ordered:The Purchase order to the dealer is shown in one of the photos. In 1964 you could still go into a dealer showroom and special order the exact vehicle you wanted! Two tone Turquoise / white (his favorite color)Sway barHeavy Duty front and rear shocksHeavy Duty front springsHD 3150 pounds rear springsHD batteryPower brakesCustom comfort Deluxe cab fabric 3-tone seatSpecial fuel filterGauges55 amp DelcotronE31 equipmentHeaterWarren hubsWest coast mirrors (removed and discarded now)HD RadiatorManual Radio20 gallon gas tank4-speed transmission (with granny low 1st gear)Smog VentFull size rear window2-speed windshield wipers12" rear steel step bumper (I removed this)Air Conditioning700x15 split rims (replaces with 700-17 split lock ring rims. originals included in sale) Power steering (he removed this for some reason)Custom built all aluminum camper shell (see last photo. since removed and discarded. Total cost before sales tax was $3542. 35 in 1964 dollars. We both drove this truck on my Dad's ranch for many years. In 1967 he purchased a new 3/4 ton truck and began just using the 1964 on the ranch in Central California. The truck has dents as shown in the photos all put there by me. The truck has never been in an accident . just my foolishness as a young man trying to 4WD up a hill too steep. and backing down the bumper which was bolted with side strips to the rear fenders put the dent in. Needless to say this truck is a work horse. The 292 High Torque six produces 170 Horsepower and 275 foot pounds of torque. this truck will pull a stump right out of the ground with ease. We used it around the ranch to pull trailers. pull other vehicles and many other things. The low mileage comes from just being used occasionally up to 1984 when he stopped licensing it for the road. He purchased a new truck every 3 years his whole life and drove them and then got a new one. Fast forward to September of 2013. My Dad. now 93 years old got ill and passed away and I inherited the truck. My friend Arnie and I went and had the truck transported to my mechanic in Santa Ana. CA to get it reconditioned. He put a new battery in it. some gas in the carb. and it started right up!Here is what we have done from then to May of 2014. Replaced front and rear window rubberNew rear window glass (there never was one because of the camper shell)Sand blast & powder coat rimsNew STA Super transport 8-ply HWY 750-17 tires. tubes and flaps 5 including spare $1400. 00NEW parts purchased and installed:Battery. oil filter. brake shoes all four wheels. all brake wheel cylinders. brake flex lines. rear axle seals. heater hoses. radiator hoses. water pump. tail gate hinges and trunions. by pass hose. fan belts. Dot 3 brake fluid. thermostat. master cylinder. rear pinion seal. rear hub inner and outer bearings. rear hub bearing cones. turn signal switch mechanism. battery cables. headlight sealed beams. distributor cap. otor coil. spark plugs. brake hard lines on differential. interior rear view mirror and outside rear view mirrors. throw out bearing. speedometer cable. gas tank. fuel sender. gas tank cardboard cover. fuel grommets. fuel hoses. fuel pump. chrome front & rear bumper and brackets. 3 pair tan seat belts. and probably a few other items I forgot to list. Here is a list of what my mechanic did:Installed a rebuilt electronic distributorTune upComplete brake jobInstalled a rebuilt alternatorService front and rear differentialsRemove and rebuilt Radiator and heater coresRebuilt and reseal AC Compressor. evacuate and recharge with Freon ($700. 00)Rebuild carburetorReplace rear pinion sealChange oil in transmission and transfer caseMore than $7000. 00 in parts and repairs we completed. For the seats I ordered the original Custom cab seat fabric form SMS fabrics in Oregon and had my upholsterer make the new seat. stunning to say the least! He also redid the one drivers side arm rest and the two interior sun visors in the correct materials. ($882. 00) I remember my Dads comments he did not want those hot DXXM vinyle seats. We have bring driving it every week since June and it is a pleasure to drive. The suspension and steering are tight as well as the chassis. It travels at 65 MPH on the freeway with ease. The bed wood is original and in great condition because it was protected by the camper shell until late 2013. Why am I selling. well with a fleet of over 25 antique cars and trucks it has come time for me to sell about 22 of the vehicles and slowly slide into semi retirement. I have had a lot of great memories in this truck. but it now time to pass it on to a younger person. The truck is located in San Clemente. CA and can be driven home without question.
