Colvin Author of Chevrolet by the Numbers The 1957 Chevy is probably the most iconic automobile ever produced on an American assembly line. When one thinks of American automotive ingenuity. a classic design and plenty of horsepower to get the job done . this is the one classic car that comes to mind to most people. There is one thing about the ’57 Chevy that can’t be denied and that there are plenty of them still out there (after ALMOST 60 YEARS!) just waiting for someone to buy and restore since more than 1. 5 million were built. in 19 body styles and 460 model/color combinations. The 1957 Chevy is the epitome of cool no matter when or where you see one and most people who aren’t even into cars like we are will know one on sight. Either they owned one. a relative or neighbor owned one. or they have seen lots of them at every car show they have ever attended. Some people like myself have seen hundreds rotting away in a field somewhere and many still do to this day. While the ’57 was no corner-turner. the car was adequate for its day to stay planted between the ditches even if you only had basic driving skills. Speaking of lines. as in the quarter mile. tons of records were set with the ’57 Chevy and many still drive them on drag strips all around the US and beyond. The '57 received a complete makeover of the 1956 model year car. With its new twin chrome bullets in the hood and the subtle but plenty pronounced chrome rear tail fins. these small body changes instantly brought the vision of a new coming space age immediately to mind. There were plenty of options available for the ’57 model year. A couple of major factory options that come to mind include air conditioning and Rochester fuel injection. While both are rare today. many restorers demand that their ’57 Chevy has at least one. The Rochester fuel injection was brand new for 1957 and was very rare. Many Chevrolet dealerships were ill-equipped to repair the new finicky system and many dealers replaced the fuelie units with a single or dual 4-barrel system. unfortunately forever changing the cars pedigree (negatively) for future generations. The ’57 Chevy powertrain options covered the gamut from the base 6-cylinder to the 265 (last year offered) to the brand new 283. The 283 was the V8 workhorse for the year and was offered as a single 2-barrel (185HP). a single 4-barrel (220HP). two dual 4-barrel (245 & 270HP). and two fuel injection engines (250 & 283HP). The high horse 283 fuelie achieved a one horsepower to cubic inch displacement for the first time in a factory available car for ‘57. A standard 3-speed. a close-ratio 3-speed. a 3-speed with overdrive. a 2-speed Turboglide and a 2-speed Powerglide were available with various engine combinations. The exterior and interior color combination option lists for the ’57 Chevy are huge and cannot really be discussed other than to say that whenever you are looking at a restored (back to original) ’57. make sure you check the trim tag codes to verify the car is wearing it’s correct paint color and matching interior. Just like all other restored vehicles. the exterior/interior combos most people look for are the real black and red cars and that holds true for this ’57 as well. An interior that matches the exterior color is also very desirable and this particular car is very well equipped as a red/red convertible with plenty of options. This car even has the very cool (and rare) continental kit. As far as desirability is concerned. the two-door hardtop Bel Airs (168. 93 built). Nomads (6. 64 built) and convertibles (48. 68 built) are the cars to have. With the supply of unrestored cars dwindling each day. interest in the two-door post sedans and four-door hardtops and sedans has been gaining ground over the last ten years or so. While the 2-door hardtop. Nomad and convertible will always be the top shelf cars. the other models offer other restorers a lower entry point to get into the hobby and it saves cars that were parted out or crushed just a couple of decades ago. No matter what ’57 you choose to buy and drive. you will enjoy it immensely. I should know . my first car was a ’57 4-door hardtop and I created lots of memories in that car that I will always remember. One thing is for sure: there is no denying the ‘57’s design is one of the most popular ever to roll out of an American factory. Thankfully Chevrolet built plenty so we can still restore and drive them almost six decades later. Long live the ’57 Chevy! Considering this vehicle is 57 years old. the few blem's we found do not amount to anything significant. Just a few blem's. Also you will note we show hundreds of photos. this '57 was not cleaned before the photo shoot. it is a driver. which means you will see some road dirt underneath. but none the less just dirt that will clean off. Remember this '57 Convertible was a ground up professional restoration completed when purchased by the Hammick Collection. and this '57 will certainly make you proud. a fantastic addition to any collection. Interior: You will have to look hard to find another 1957. Window crank handles for driver and passenger doors and driver and rear passenger windows on both sides go up and down great. We note that some adjustments need to be made in the windows on the sides (see blem's). Glass in all windows is in exceptional condition. There are a couple of window rubbers that couple use replacing (dried cracking like vent window. see blem's). Dashboard finish is very clean as you can see in the many photos. Dash lights come on when the key is turned on. There is no variable adjustment for brightness on the dash lights. The glove compartment has a place for a light inside. but it looks like a glove box light was not added when the restoration was done. The interior is beautiful in every way. Make sure to view a few blem's as we found in the interior. Carpet is like new. visors are like new. The top locks above the visors on both sides. work as they should. Exterior: Beautiful matador red paint has a high reflective gloss. hard to find blem's. Paint is in exceptional condition. Door key locks and trunk lock work. The Continental Kit works great to quickly move the spare tire securely out of the way to provide you quick access to the roomy trunk. Mechanically: Heater. defroster and dash air flow does work. Horn works. Present owner states he is not aware of any leaks. We did put this '57 up on a car ramp and visually inspect the undercarriage. We did not see any visible signs of fluid leaks. We noted that the undercarriage is a bit dusty. could use a pressure wash to be spotless. Being a slight bit dirty underneath is what we expect to see and considered normal since owner states this '57 is a driver. not a trailer queen. Cigar lighter works. wipers work. headlights. tail lights. brake lights work. backup lights and turn signals work both outside and inside (on dash). Tag light does not work. likely a bulb. Clock on dash does not work (owner states he was told it was unplugged to prevent slow drain on battery). This '57 has what appears to be the original GM Wonderbar radio in exceptional condition. however we noted the radio and power antenna does not work (owner says he never uses the radio. was not aware they did not work). It may be there is no power to the radio and antenna. The power antenna and motor assembly themselves appears to all be there. The fuel and temperature gauge. The tires were all replaced to factory spec in 2012. between 300 and 400 miles on the tires since they were replaced. Current owner has used premium gas since he bought this vehicle. Road Test: The 283 CI V8 engine has two four barrel carb's. lots of power. Transmission shifts really smooth. drives out beautifully on the highway. lots of power regular driving and plenty of passing power. Drives and brakes straight. just feels like floating on a cloud. When you turn on the ignition key the generator light comes on as it should (small round light on the dash). Once the car has started the generator light on the dash immediately goes out as it should. Comments: The owner states he has probably only put about 600 total miles on this '57 since he purchased it. has driven it on the open highway at 70 miles per hour. This '57 drove and rode beautifully at all speeds. This is the nicest 1957 Chevrolet Belair Convertible we have been in.
