Description of 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS Hardtop 2-Door

1968 Camaro 396 Big Block Original SS Car with factory AC and tilt steering.

1968 Camaro recently finished from 2 year restoration with fresh high performance motor and new transmission. Car has a near perfect paint job, brand new drivetrain and every component replaced or refurbished. I have entered this car into a couple car shows and it has won both shows taking best of show against 100K plus builds. I bought the car because it was very solid and former owner confirmed it spent most of its life as a drag car. I have not verified this but mileage could be correct as car spent most of its life as a drag car until the late 1990's when it went through a complete rotisserie restorationalsoaccording to the previous owner. During that restoration the only metal replaced where the front and passenger floor pans and the rear quarter panel lower halves and holes from the roll cage. All other metal on the car is original and in perfect condition including the trunk. During that restoration all components were replaced including new body bushings, etc. The car spent most of its life on the east coast until it came to Iowa in the early 2000's

When I bought the car I took it completely apart and replaced or refurbished any items that needed attention. I had the car completely taken apart and professionally repainted. The car was taken to bare metal and it was as solid as the previous owner said it would be with no areas needing patching of any kind. The car was reassembled and the motor was rebuilt with high performance components and the transmission was replaced with a brand new 700R4 from Monster Transmission rated for 650 HP due to the high performance upgrades done to the motor. The 10 bolt posi rear end with 373 gears was checked and was in perfect shape. Rear drum brakes were rebuilt as were the front disk brakes. A correct power booster and proportioning valve with new brakelines were installed. All new brake hoses, etc. New Power steering gear from CPP. All new water pump, fuel pump, alternator, etc. New distributor, plugs, wires, ignition, heater core, etc. Almost all items are new. Below I will list the items individually. I have receipts for all work done on this car.

Engine

All machining and assembly of motor performed by local race car engine builder Kirchners Machine.Motor was completely assembled and built and should produce well north of 500HP and will accept high octane gasoline. It is now a hydraulic roller motor.

Original forged Crankshaft checked, balancedand polished, new freeze plugs, engine magna fluxed, RaceTec Forged Pistons and rings 13cc,, PBM 4340 forged rods, ARP bolts, with all new clevite bearings. Rotating assembly was balanced and professionally built to race car specs..

Comp Cam fuel pump push ro, high flow fuel pump, cloyes cam bearing button and cam cover.

Heads

Heads were completely rebuilt with all new PBM severe duty race valves, Heads are closed chamber from 67 and have been extensively and professionally ported and polished with the larger valves installed. New Comp Springs for Cam were installed from the kit as well as a set of Comp Ultra pro Magnum XD roller rockers 1.7 with Comp Magnum pushrods. ARP bolts used.

MSD 6AL-2 distributor with rev. limit set at 6,000, MSD pro billet distributor with Vacuum advance, MSD 8.8 MM wires, new water pump, new alternator, Edelbrock air gap intake, Holley double pumper aluminum750 cfm carb., all new hoses, new aluminum 4 core radiator with electric fan. New brake booster and prop. valve from CPP, rebuilt windshield wiper pump motor, flowtec cermamic coated headers and other items I'm sure I am missing.

Drivetrain

Drivetrain was in great shape as all rubber bushings and componentswere replaced in rebuild. New Shocks. New 700R4 transmission from Monster rated for 650HP with 2 year warranty guarantee, with new 2400 stall convertor with transmission cooler, Includes 4th gear lockout withlevel 2 shift. Rear end was inspected and was in great shape and is a 10 bolt posi rear end with 3.73 gear. Rear drum brakes were rebuilt as were front disc brakes, new rubber lines were installed as were the brake lines. New flowmaster super 44 H pipe exhaust. Driveshaft was rebalanced and checked by local driveshaft shop.

Body

Car was completely disassembled and sanded down to bare metal. It was professionally repainted with Dupont Chromabase 2 stage system with 3 coats color and3 coats clear. It was wet sanded down to near perfection.Paint is as near perfect as you can get as paint itself costs nearly $2,000. It may need a little more wet sanding in some areas but it is as perfect as you can get. Stripes are painted on and are painted perfectly. All rubber gasketing was replaced on the car, all new door hardware, emblems, everything is new including the bumpers and all the door locks. Door strikers are new. All bolts are correct as a body bolt kit was used for installation to make sure all components were correct. Paint does have some flaws on the very lower rocker panel on drivers side has some touching up that cannot be seen unless you get the car in the air and get up on it. Also on the trunk is a touch up mark that is from a rock hitting the car from my neighbors weed trimmer. It has been touched up but needs to be looked at by a shop. Both these items taken care of and the paint would be a concourse level 1 paint job. I just want to be realclear as this is a high dollar paint job but does have a couple small flaws. The rear glass needs replaced and can be done for about $200.

Interior

The Interior of the car is completely new. Dura mat was installed completely in the car. New Carpet, New door cards front and back, new seat covers and sport seat foam in the front seats and new seat cover and foam in the rear. All original seat belts, dash pad was ok, dash was repainted, center console is original as are all the plastics in the car. New headliner and original sun visors. Only item that does not work on interior is the dome light. New heater core, and guage pod. Original tilt wheel steering wheel column with Grant steering wheel. All electrical was replaced in last restoration and was in great shape thoughout the car All dash bulbs and exterior bulbs and head lights were replaced.

Wire in trunk is for an amplifier and subwoofer setup that I never installed. Car makes the perfect music.

Wheels and Tires

Nitto P275-40ZR-17 Nitto NT555 extreme on back and P235 45ZR17 Nitto NT555 extreme on front with Torque Thrust 11 Rims with McGuard wheel locks.

To sum up this was a 2 year refresh on a car restored 16 years ago. So it isa brand new 500+ HP Big Block Chevy Camaro ready for cruise nights and car shows and be ready to win the car shows. Included with the sale of the car if you want them are Hotchkis lowering springs for the front and lowering blocks for the back. I bought these items and decided to keep the car at the stock height. This isn't a numbers matching car but it is an orginal Big Block SS A/Ccar. The values for a #1 car are $75,000 +, #2 cars are $54,400 +, #3 cars are $41.900 +. I have priced this car between #2 and #3 because of the 2 small paint flaws. If that is a hold up for you I would suggest coming to Iowa and seeing the car for yourself. This car is a high horsepower car that gets a ton of stares and looks as it sounds as good as it looks. I am selling to fund another build as I only take on one project at a time and I think this is one of my finest ones yet. I can take more pictures and I will answer any questions you have. These cars are an investment and will keep gaining in value as the years go on. I have more pictures and a video sound clip if interested and I can email to you.
