Chevrolet introduced its Advance Design trucks. the first completely redesigned GM vehicles to appear after World War II. Owners of earlier pickup models had asked for a roomier. more comfortable cab with improved visibility and a wider pickup box. The new Chevy trucks answered the need. Designers sought to make the truck’s styling clean and attractive. Headlamps were now set wide apart in the front fenders. and five horizontal bars made up the grille. This design ran through 1955 and the five-window design is coveted amongst truck collectors. In early-1949 the trucks came in three sizes: ½ ton (GP). ¾ ton (GR). & 1 ton (GS). The script on the front hood was either 3100 (½ ton). 3600 (¾ ton). or 3800 (1 ton). OWNERSHIP HISTORY: This ¾ ton GR model 3600 truck (#21GRC2984) was purchased new in 1949 by a Waukon Iowa farmer (last photo in the gallery) and was used for light duties on the farm & short trips into the small Iowa town of 400 residents. Mileage is 88. 00 original miles and was authenticated by the original owner in 2013 but no verification other than limited wear on the original interior. The farmer owned it for 65 years. keeping it in the farm garage when not in use. Now in his late-90's. the original owner no longer drives so the truck was sold to a San Diego truck collector in early-2014. MECHANICAL: Numbers matching original engine (216ci inline 6-cylinder) starts easily and drives straight & strong. In 2013 it was driven on two club tours and it drove great with no problems and has had 2000 miles put on it last year. Its original 4-speed manual transmission shifts easily into all gears. The doors open and shut with no effort and shut tight. The glass is all good and the windows go up and down with ease. It’s running on a 6-Volt electrical system and has a new battery. It could use a minor tune-up & carburetor adjustment to get the most from its engine. ORIGINAL ITEMS: Dark blue paint with rattle can touch-up’s & clearcoat. Original interior. headliner. sun visors. & door panels. Original fenders. hood. & gate with old wood in bed. Original painted rims with factory pin-striping & chrome hub caps. Original heater works. Original owner’s manual & 1949 Iowa license plate. The original Fulton cab visor is from the late-40’s or early-50’s. It’s had a new chrome grill. hood ornament. & gas tank installed. ISSUES: There is surface rust on the cab floor and the driver’s side firewall has rust showing through. There is minor rust in the body. not extensive. There is no rear view mirror but the driver’s side mirror is included but is not mounted. Front cab rubber floor mat disintegrated many years ago. Turn signal lever is missing but easily sourced.
