1955 Chevrolet Del Ray The Chevrolet Del Ray, named after Delray Beach, Florida, debuted in 1954 as an optional trim level on two-door models of Chevrolet's mid-range 210 series of mid-size automobiles. In 1958, it became a distinct series of its own at the bottom of Chevy's lineup, and added a four-door sedan, and sedan delivery, but it only remained in production for that model year. For consignment, a wonderfully restored example of the Del Ray trim in a 210 Chevrolet. Featuring the same exterior as the plain 210, most of the changes were on the interior, which featured "waffle" like pleating color keyed to the exterior along with carpeting and other minor upgrades. Exterior Bathed in India Ivory (off white) the paint would be considered very good, as only a few chipping off areas can be noted overall. Kudos to the chrome and trim work on this car as it is simply excellent. From the rear polished stainless spear melding into the door surrounds, headlight and blue dot taillight bezels, front grille and bumper, door handles and mirrors, and don't forget the window surrounds which have a wonderful contrast to the Onyx (black) top. Throw in some Lake Pipes, all shined up, and tri pointed star wheel covers wrapped in wide whites, and we could already be cruisin', but you are still readin'! Interior A swing of the door and we are in period correct black vinyl waffle pattern sporting some white stitching, and white vinyl bolsters, on a split front bench and a rear bench. Plenty of room to crawl into the back seat and...well whatever. Feasting our eyes on the door panels, they are matchy matchy with the seats, waffle pattern white stitching and all. A peek towards the dash and noted are the dual fan dash with speedo on drivers' side, and Chevrolet script speaker cover, over a clock on the passenger's side. All bright and shiny and you gotta love the bowtie cutout pattern on the front of the dash, all polished and proud. Headliner is very nice and tightey whitey, and carpet is in black covered with rubber floor mats. Sitting proudly in the hump is a Hurst shifter. A shout out to the original steering wheel with an aftermarket tachometer on the column, and a threesome of aftermarket gauges hanging below the dash in the driver's sightline. Lest we forget the trunk which deserves some accolades, as it too is nicely detailed. Drivetrain Hoisting the heavy hood (hey what the heck that's all H's!) we are met with a blinged out totally restored 235ci Inline 6-cylinder, topped by a snazzy chromed air cleaner, and matte gray Clifford Intake manifold. Sneaking in between this manifold are gnarly headers, and these are upstaged by a chromed valve cover, alternator, and hydraulic brake fluid canister. The block is a nice contrasting blue, and all good in this restored engine bay bathed in black. Undercarriage No rust here although on the rockers there has been some damage with the results leaving a hole underneath, however all structurally sound, and mechanically good, with 4-wheel drum brakes, independent front suspension, 4-link rear, a Ford 8" pumpkin, and the header pipes making their way rearward through a glass pack style muffler system. Overall a great presentation for this first year of the Tri Five era 210 in Del Ray trimmings. Great color combo, simple but effective, and an under the hood view to die for, and an interior that is reminiscent of the bathroom tile in your grandparent's rancher. Now can we please go for a cruise?! (You'll have to purchase it first, but I'll still go!)
