Description of 1939 Chevrolet Other 85 |
Look through our inventory and you'll see a lot of late-30s Fords, but oddly, not many Chevrolets. The big two have been duking it out since the mid-20s, and if your tastes run to the pre-war era, you owe it to yourself to take a good look at this very nice 1939 Chevrolet Master 85 2-door sedan. Still in its original specs, right down to the 216 Inline-6 under the hood, this is the perfect prewar classic for the guy who likes to drive. The beautiful beige and black paint combination is pretty much exactly what you'd find in the late '30s, and on the curvaceous 2-door's body it looks amazing, bringing out the details and giving it a very authentic look. The body is OEM steel that hasn't been chopped or modified in any way. And why would you? The Master 85 is already one of the most handsome cars of the era, with tidy proportions, that wind-swept grille, and a timeless profile of the long body. Bodywork is quite good, with a lot of extra care used on the final finish, and even though there are signs of use (particularly on the black parts of the car, including the running boards that could use some touch-up), the overall presentation is quite good. That means tons of block sanding and hand work to get all the surfaces flat, and an expert behind the paint gun to lay it down so nicely on all that Chevy steel. And despite the minor imperfections, this finish should look this good for years to come. Note that all the original trim was retained as well, from the ornate hood trim to the bright bumpers fore and aft, adding interest and great contrast to otherwise subdued color scheme. And yes, those cool high-mounted taillights are factory-issue, although they do have blue dots in the lenses for a custom touch. The interior is an equally artful blend of yesterday and today that will simply knock your socks off. The seats are upholstered in a period style using updated vinyl materials to create a very inviting cockpit. A tall, upright original steering wheel is mounted on the stock steering column and frames the original instruments in the black dash that keep an eye on the Flat 6 under the hood. Everything is pure stock 1939 production line inside, from the tall shifter with a wood knob topper to the big pedals jutting out from the floorboards. Door panels were upholstered to match the seats, and the spacious rear bench is finished the same way as the front. The carpets are a bit stained but help insulate the cabin, the garnish moldings in the cabin blend in seamlessly, and the headliner above ties everything in together nicely. Out back, the trunk is simple, nothing too flashy (although bright red carpet might be flashy in your book), and it houses a full size spare tire and jack set that could easily be the car' original unit. Retro is in, and there's nothing cooler than a flathead powering your vintage rod. This is the smooth-running 216 cubic inch Inline-6 version and it's been fitted with period-appropriate parts throughout. From the original valve cover to the oil bath air cleaner everything is as it should be, and the generator is still in charge of power while an original single carb mixes air and fuel. With a single exhaust system blowing through a stock-spec muffler, it has a distinctive flathead sound that will get attention, and if you haven't driven a vintage flatty, you're definitely in for a treat. The 3-speed manual gearbox shifts lightly and the original rear end hangs on leaf springs that can handle all the torque with ease, this one rides like it should. Matching blacked-out steel wheels with 16-inch whitewall bias-plys look right, and the rather rare Chevrolet Baby Moon hubcaps that adorn them really add a little flash to the entire presentation. Fully sorted and ready to be enjoyed, this awesome Chevy 2-door is a great show and go cruiser that'll make you smile every time you see it. Call today! |
