1967 Datsun 2000 Racing Roadster. Here is a unique opportunity for the right buyer to gain a unique life experience to attend the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion for 2018. This event is listed as one of the premier Vintage Race events in the world. This car has been accepted to participate in 2018. 2018 has the added excitement of being the first time Nissan has been selected as the featured Marque. You would need a qualified driver to actually drive in the event. The restoration process is ongoing, so this is a limited time offer for the right buyer to be able to finish the paint and preparation to their own level of perfection desired. The car needs final paint prep work and final paint. The Paint needs to match the historical pictures provided with the application which is in a very attractive livery of black with orange stripe and rear panel as it raced in the 1960’s. I have scheduled a race shop in Sacramento that can take on the work and finish the car in time for the event if you do not have you own preferred vendors. This specific car has significant historical provenance. The car comes from Southern California with significant race history documented back to 1968. This car is believed to be the winningest Datsun known. Not with events run, or podiums, but with over 100 wins based on interviews with prior owners and additional research available. The next highest car found so far has been a Nissan GTU car with 93 podium finishes. This car has attended the SCCA Runoffs multiple times in both 1600 and 2000 configuration. Not one, but two of the early drivers were factory funded to race the car. Additionally the car has been raced by Dick Roberts who ran Nissan Competition. The car started as a 1600 but with years of hard racing and modifications it was decided to replace the body and frame to a vintage period correct race restoration. A 1967 2000 Datsun Roadster donor car was used. This has been a three year project so far working on restoring the car to get it to the current condition. The body was removed from the frame, the frame was installed on a Rotisserie, then the frame was repaired, repainted, and suspension installed. The body was then put on the Rotisserie and repaired. The floor panels were replaced with new panels that were bead rolled with the Datsun Griffin logo from the early Roadsters to add a touch of style. The rear flares were reduced to look closer to original body shape. The paint was stripped down to primer, any remaining visible dents or bodywork was straightened out, and primer re applied to the areas worked on. The build included using as many original parts as practical and component weight was given consideration throughout the build. The car retains few stock or original parts as it was modified in period. The parts list from the current build includes Nissan competition front springs, Carerra Racing Shocks, Racing alignment including front camber, Front Big Brake fabricated conversion, A new exhaust from header back was fabricated. There is a custom steering wheel, stainless steel braided brake and clutch lines, Airhart Magnesium master cylinder, tie down loops on rear spring mounts for towing, bucket racing seat. Leather was used for door stops, inner door handles, trunk latch, and hand laced wiring harness cover. Roll bar included. The rear end ratio used was 3.9 with an open differential matched to a four speed transmission for weight. The car had street components added to be able to license the car for the street to help be able to sort out the car without having to tow to track including standard date code 1967 lap belt. Stock gas tank. The result was an astounding weight of only 1,623 pounds in street trim which gives lively performance. The Engine was purchased as a low hour rebuild from a car built for auto cross. Then it was disassembled, inspected, the bores were honed, valves lapped, a hotter cam installed, and then painted. The pistons and rods appeared to be lightened and balanced. The SU style carbs were disassembled, cleaned and inspected. The ignition was updated to an optical trigger high energy ignition. The compression appeared to be standard, and the car runs on premium gas. The engine has run one race at Laguna Seca where it finished 7th. There is an oil leak at the back of the motor. I put cardboard down and get some oil, but the oil level has not moved. Issues with the car known: chrome parts have surface pitting, tail lights faded and cracked. Some primer wrinkled near master cylinder, but have not found a leak, so may be a spill from lid seal or filling. One lug bolt is missing on rear wheel. Some light sheet metal warpage on front valence that does not show up well in pictures. Both doors appear to have been replaced as one has some welding for replacing inside door latch handle, color is different, and passenger side has uneven gap. There is some cracking in the paint on top of the rear fenders and a paint crack along one edge of hood scoop. Steel wheels have some rust pitting under the paint. The car has a clear California Title and Registration. The car has been driven about 120 miles on the street to sort out any issues since the build. The car drives solid and reliable. Tires are old Yokohama A008 so would not recommend driving on them due to date code. 1967 Roadsters have started to come into their own for collectibility and here is sale result from the last year. http://bhauction.jp/search/lot03.html A considerable effort was made to track down and interview prior owners back to 1968. The documentation will be included with the sale. The car comes with an SCCA log book . The car has attended the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion one time prior to this year, at which point it was only the seventh Japanese car ever accepted to this prestigious event. The pictures used were the best currently available as work is ongoing. The windshield is not on the car nor is it included in the sale.
