Description of 1968 Dodge Charger |
This 1968 Charger is 1 of 259 cars equipped with a 383HP/ 4 speed Hurst manual transmission combination. In addition to having this unusual drivetrain combination, this car was ordered without a shifter console and without turn signals in the hood. When these options were deleted, Chrysler installed a chrome trim ring at the base of the shifter and installed rubber blocks in the turn signal holes in the hood.In addition to being a Console and Hood Turn Signal Delete car, this car was also equipped with Factory AC, Rear Defogger, and FF1 Light Green Metallic Paint. Many Mopar aficionados have mentioned that this is car could be a one of one car with the options it has, but all I know is it is at least 1 of 259!
This car was last registered in 1987 by the man I bought the car from in three years ago. He said that his Dad bought the car new in 68 and he purchased it from him in 1981. I have no reason to doubt him, but I do not have the car's original bill of sale. The car has 82k original miles and although it has been parked for over 30 years, it does indeed run. I drove the car onto the trailer when I purchased it. The hideaway headlight doors even work perfectly after all of the years of non-use.
This car is complete and original. This car has never been painted nor has the drivetrain been rebuilt. The casting date on the block is 12-7-1967. The 383 has an aftermarket Edelbrock carb installed on it, but the original carburetor comes with the car (date code Jan. 1968). The 4 speed transmission is original also has a date stamped of January 1968. The original date coded Chrysler alternator is also included car.
All of the original chrome window trim, as well as the spare tire & jack come with the car. The dome light lens and rear window defogger switch which are not installed on the car are also included. To the best of my knowledge, the only original pieces that the car does not have with it are the radio and the original wheels. The car even comes with the original keys! Also included in the sale are several original Chrysler sheet metal parts such as a driver's door (off of a 1970), 3 fenders, front valiance, hood hinges, and a trunk lid off of a 68 R/T car.
Out of nearly 100,000 chargers built in 1968, less than 3% of all chargers were equipped with a manual transmission from the factory. There are not many 1968 Chargers out there in their original state, especially a low production number one like this. This Charger is in need of sheet metal work, but it has a very solid structure. The front and rear frame rails are very solid and the doors shut very nicely. The rear wheel houses are rusty on the bottoms, but seem very solid otherwise. Every piece of sheet metal that the car needs replaced is available and can be purchased from AMD at reasonable prices. The partially readable fender tag and build sheet along rare options the car has make it the perfect candidate for a numbers matching restoration. All of the hard to find parts are intact and are the same ones the car started life with! To view over100 close up photos of the car and the extra parts that come with it, please contact me and I will send you a link to a photobucket. EBay policy would not allow me to include the link to these additional photos in this ad.
