Description of 1964 Dodge Dart Convertible |
This adorable little 1964 Dodge Dart 270 convertible is a recent restoration of a dry western car. It was a California car since new. although its original black plates had lapsed from the DMV computers and has since been re-registered. It was sold new near Santa Barbara. and the current Palm Springs owner bought it out of Los Angeles a few years back. The little Dart was very solid and ran well. showed just under 80. 00 miles but needed cosmetic attention. It had been cheaply repainted in a jezebel red. had a poorly repaired dented fender. and the interior was tired. It was equipped with a 225 slant six. Torque-Flite Automatic trans. and a power top. The owner engaged a retired auto body man to paint it who spent over a year disassembling it down to a running shell- all trim and interior was removed as well as the doors. hood. trunk and fenders- and stripped it to bare metal. Working in his spare time. over a year was spent in body and paint work. The painter was used to high end European cars and the resulting finish is as smooth as glass. There are no waves in the sides or ripples in the hood or deck. The paint itself. in a 1964 Dodge color called Dark Red Poly. would be appropriate on a Rolls-Royce but makes a knockout of the little Dodge Dart. A new black Dart GT interior from Legendary Auto Interiors was fitted (including bucket seats) along with a ruby red top. The bumpers were replated. the bright trim repolished. and the delicate headlamp bezels (they’re very fragile- ask any Dart owner) professionally restored and reanodized. Mechanically the car ran well. but was fitted with a new radiator and water pump. a rebuilt front suspension and a new set of whitewall radials. The result is a little charmer. It turns heads everywhere it does and is a definite “standout. ” The rarity of the car. combined with the condition and that outstanding Dark Red finish is just the ticket. to the point where at its first car show it was awarded a best in class against some mighty fierce competition. In fact. it caught the eye of Hemmings Classic Car and was featured in their April. 2014 issue. (Pictures below)Of course no car is perfect. and while the Dart is very nice indeed and a crowd pleaser. there are still further things that can be done. The engine bay has not been painted or detailed (although the hood has) the radio is inoperative. the odometer has stopped at about 93 miles from restoration. the rear quarter windows don’t want to raise that last half inch. and there is some patina on the die cast plating. None of this diminishes the charm of the car and all of which could be pretty easily addressed if you want to take it further into the show world. Or if you just want to enjoy it for cruise nights. all you need is to lower the power top and snap the cute little matching black boot in place. We’ve placed a very reasonable reserve on the car which roughly represents the cost of the cosmetics. It’s an excellent value indeed. The car is located in dry and sunny Palm Springs. California and may be viewed on appointment before auctions end. Please peruse the many pictures. Note: When the car was re-registered. the CHP insisted on a new VIN plate. It has a clear CA title. has not been salvaged. and has no evidence of any accident damage other than the dented fender we mentioned. That fender was replaced. not re-repaired. My name is Jeff and I am listing the vehicle for my neighbor who is not terribly computer savvy. I live here full time and am generally available to show the car with a day's notice. Port delivery for a European Buyer will run approximately $300. Please feel free to ask any questions prior to bidding. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Remember that your bid is a commitment to purchase. Thanks for looking and happy bidding! |
