Description of 1947 Ford Super Deluxe |
Purchased the 1947 Ford sedan about 3 years ago. Looking the car over, it's apparent that it is a solid southern vehicle, as there was no visible rust underneath. My first task was determining that the engine was not the original, and, for whatever reason, smoked heavily. I began a quest for the original 59AB motor. Found one and sent it to "VALVE-EN-BLOCS" in Warsaw, NY for rebuild, which ended up .030 over, with adjustable valves and a stock cam. Then I added a BUBBAS IGNITION distributor, Skip's water pumps, and carburetor from CharlieNY, all specialists in their craft. Meanwhile, I had the headliner and door panels replaced by Carl's Auto Seat Covers in Rochester, NY. The bumpers (which were perfect to start with, just a little dull) were sent to Sandy's Bumper Mart in Syracuse, NY for rechroming. Since it had bias ply whitewalls, and with the straight front axle and kingpins, it drove like a '47. The addition of Arizona Diamondback radial WW tires improved the handling immensely. The brakes were replaced by the previous owner and checked out fine. Once it came time to do the motor swap, I felt that once the motor was out, it made sense to go through the rest of the drive train. Smitty's Transmissions in RochesterNY rebuilt it with NOS parts. The rear Banjo and torque tube assembly was completely rebuilt by me, using all new bearings and a new 3.78 ring and pinion. It is still 6 volt positive ground. I opted to replace most of the 70 year old wiring with new, original style. One repaint, many years ago, so it's not perfect. Probably did a number of things that I've either forgot about, or didn't need to, but in the end, it's been brought back to factory look and feel. I realize now that it would have been easier (and cheaper) to hot rod it. This 1947 Ford Super Deluxe starts, runs stops and feels like it should. f you have any questions, want more pictures, or want to inspect this Ford, call 585-944-5125.
