Description of 1942 Ford Other Pickups |
1942 ford pickup. Definitely started out military. I was told it came from Fort Carson. Colorado sometime after WW2. It was changed to a 50s hot rod with some type of later V8' maybe Oldsmobile mated to original 3 speed. Was driven that way until 1997 when the previous owner purchased without engine and trans. Steering column from 50's with internal turn signals. Rear end is 48 or newer 1/2 ton unit. Somewhere in a G. I motor pool or wherever later rear fenders were put on the rear and they really have a good line with the 42 front fenders. I have tried to create what I was building in the late 50's and 60's. Started out with a good 1953 flathead V8 that I consider to be one of the best flatheads. But with all flatheads I pulled it apart to check for cracks. Turned out to be a virgin engine with no cracks between head bolts and more importantly. none between cylinders and valves seats. I had it reconditioned with original bore and original std crank. full valve job. all bearings. rings and gaskets. Used a 1949 3 speed with overdrive and floor shift. Most of wiring was done on one of the rebuilds earlier with only a few light pigtails still original. It is 6 volt positive ground. I like to put electric pumps on these old vehicles because they really start well after setting. 15 inch radials for a better look and drive. The stock 53 flathead V8 engine has all the power I was looking for. but if you wanted more it is a great start as dual carbs and high compression heads would be an easy add on or a great engine to do a big build on in the future. You may notice that there are many factory Army add ons such as rope tie downs. bow mounts for top and bullet ends on bed rails to keep canvas from tearing. There is some minor rust in floor boards but they have been repaired and minor rust on bottom of fenders. Is a factory metal bed over wood and when looking from underneath some of the boards on end are showing some rot. Running boards have some holes under the Ford step plates. New Dual exhaust exiting in the rear. I built this for myself to be a fun retro-rod survivor. Was going to keep it forever as I am 67 and not up for long term projects but found a 36 p. u. And can't afford to keep or drive two. All glass good but some rubber trim showing its age and missing. Doors shut very solid and windows go up and down well. e brake works well. All brakes gone thru and it drives good. but is still an original 42. Two wierd pictures are of the hinged board that adjusts the seat back. never seen that before. Serial number stamped on frame matches the title that is current and in my name. Car is registered and insured and I drive it regularly around town mostly. Would I drive it cross country? Don't know. It is 73 years old. would probably trailer it. Please call with questions. tom 303-243-0180. I would really like to talk to any serious buyers. I am in monument colorado and can store for several weeks if you insure it. The picture of the army truck is the only one I could find of a ford pickup with the Army canvas rear enclosure. I think it was 42 only and probably from the few made from Dec 07-1941 until Feb 10 1942 when all production went to the armed forces. Didn't buy it for the army differences. just the originality and patina but it does make it very rare. I polished and waxed the patina. I don't like the clear coats as they are going to come off in a few years. Thought of eventually going all army or maybe restored but either way did not want crap clear coat on it. Horn is questionable and brake lights iffy. Electric wiper not working yet. ill try to get going. Nothing major. just older and always needing minor work. I just want to start on my 36 (picture shown). |
