Description of 1967 International Harvester Travelall

For sale: 1967 International Harvester Travelall 1100 4x4,dry western survivor truck that's been treated to a light cosmetic restoration and complete powertrain upgrade by the long term 2nd owner, who was an International dealership parts manager. It's a gorgeous truck that performs well and never fails to wow the folks at the car show or the gas station. Originally purchasedlate in1967 (so it's titled as a 68, per IH policy at the time) in Washington state by a fussyengineer. Herbert Rose was a mechanical and electrical engineer that held 47 patents. He purchased the truck to pull an Airstream trailer around the west with his wife. He kept meticulous records of all work done to the truck, always at an IH dealer. On one trip in the late 80's between Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, the original 345 engine broke a camshaft and they landed at an International dealer in the high desert of Montana. Rather than wait for an engine rebuild, Herb purchased another low mile usedTravelall on the spot, and the dealership parts manager purchased Herb's beloved "Rocinante" with intentions of installing a 392 engine and upgrading the direct drive T36 5 speed to a T34 overdrive 5 speed, which is exactly what he did. I'm also a fussy engineer by vocation, and I purchased the truck from the IH parts manager, making me the third owner. I've been involved with vintage cars and trucks for 35 years, and I can tell you this is a very special rig. I'll do my best to describe it accurately below:
Exterior: Professional repaint done in the early 90s and shines well with no major flaws. Color is a Ford truck turquoise that was chosen as it's very close to the original Aspen Green(actually a turquoise), but a bit brighter. The paint formula and extra paint are included. Truck was completely taken down and interior and underhood were repainted as well. All new weatherstrip, windlace, and new windshield were installed at that time. Doors were rebuilt and latches replaced with NOS and doors close like a bank vault - a real rarity with these Travelalls. Dual frenched antennas and a custom rear bumper are tasteful deviations from stock, but would be straightforward to return to original. Per2nd owner there were no majorrustissuesprior to repaint, andthere is no evidence of anynow20 years after the repaint - there are three small pencil tip size warts on the left fender, not sure if blisters or just smallgrit. They don't show up in pics and are not noticeable. Only rust I can see(and there is somerust through as well as surface)was in theusual cowl vent area under the dash from debris in cowl vents holding moisture, and window seal leaking. That area on both sides was treated withMetal Ready and POR-15 as shown in pics. New window seal was installed at repaint and truck has been stored inside since. No evidence of undercarriage corrosion as seen in linkedPhotobucket albumin pics. There is a small crack in the paintlow on the driver side rear corner as shown in pics. Grille is super nice, and headlight and park lightbezels were replaced with NOS. Taillight bezels, cowl panel, hubcaps, and front bumper wererechromed. Stainless moldings were polished.Front fender chrome strips andemblems were not rechromed and there is noticeable pitting on them- plan on replating those if you want it perfect. Glass is good, there isone largecrack that was filled and repaired in one side window that is not noticeable and doesn't show up in pics.

Interior: Original and good driver quality, with the exception of the seats which were reupholstered in non-factory pattern. Presents well. A couple of small cracks in original dash by speaker, and black camera case transfer is peeling back a bitat top of gauge panel as shown. No radio at present, will leave that choice up to new owner. Very sorted rig, all gauges and lights and heater work, parking brake works, and even parking brake warning light. Defroster cable is stuck, but heat blows out of both defroster and floor and truck is also equipped with rare working rear heat. Rear window works but you have to "help" it back up with your hands, so plan on at least lubricating that. Driver armrest is cracked, andheadliner has some cracks and sags, and extra supportribs have been installed. There are no seat belts, but attaching bolts are there, and aftermarketbelts are readily available. Metal box shown in the rear is full ofparts and spares,PO carried them onroad trips just in case.Truck is ready to use and enjoy, but remember old rigs do need constant attention so if you haven't owned a 50 year old truck before, adjust your expectations accordingly.

Mechanical: Truck has been completely gone through mechanically and it starts, runs, and drives out well. No major leaks. 392 4 barrel engine was professionally rebuilt and hotter camshaft added for a nice lope. Really pulls strong. The truck was driven quite a bit after rebuild and per previous owner there are about 50k miles on the rebuild. Truck is showing 110k total miles. Does have usual lifter tick at startup that goes away in a minute or two, andthe usualpuff of smoke at startup after sitting due to valve seals hardening. 392 engines were bulletproof with forged internals and timing gears instead of a chain, and should run 200k miles with proper maintenance.Original direct drive 5 speed trans was professionally rebuilt with NOS gears to periodoverdrive specs (.8 to 1 final drive). Actually previous owner had it rebuilt twice due to one noisy gear the first time! Really makes the truck drivable on modern roads, gear pattern takes some getting used to. With the copious torque of the 392, you really only need 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Also the front diff and rear Power Lock diff were completely rebuilt and gears were changed from 4.77 to 4.10, also in the interest of drivability.Rolling down theroad in top gear at highway speed puts the tach at a comfortable 3000 rpm and the speedo at 8-10mph slow.Expensive Toyo 7.00-15 tires on original factory rims have good tread but are showing somecupping and are flat spotted, so plan on replacing them.Upgrading to a tallertire would make highway drivingeven more satisfying. Original spare is under the truck in the optional under-car carrier. Brakes were completely gone thru, and it stopsstraight and true, but truck has been sitting for a couple of years now and both front wheel cylinders are seeping, so plan on replacing those. Per previous owner both fuel tanks work, but the left hasn't been used this year or last so I haven't tried that one. Fuel in that tank doesn't sell horrible, but may have to drain it. Overall great running and drivingtruckforcasual weekend shows, ortake to Cars N Coffee and blow some hipster minds.

Pricing/Misc: I looked for recent Travelall 4x4 comps on Ebay, and found two - a restored former Montana truck that sold in Missouri for $22k,and one in Bakersfield CA that went $17k. Search completed listings and you will find them. I got a good dealon this truck, and the reserve is setfar below those, and much less than the cost of restoration. I hope "Rocinante" goes to a good home, it's a once in a lifetime rig!

You are welcome and encouraged to personally inspect the truckprior to bidding.I'm not a dealer, I don't do this for a living, I'm an enthusiast. If you'd like any detailed photos of a specific area of the truck, just ask! I have many photos of it but will be glad to take more if needed. Please ask any questions you like before bidding. You will be answered quickly and honestly.Transport isreadily available, and probably cheaper than fixing rust on an eastern tetanus truck. Montana title isclear and inmynamewith no liens. Truck runs well, but flying in and driving the truck home isn't advisable. This is a rural state with a long way between towns and cell service is spotty. After the sale, I can store the truck for up to 30 days free, after that $100 per month storage will be due. Buyer needs to get insurance as soon as car is paid for as I will cancel mine at that time.
