Description of 1964 International Harvester Scout Red Carpet Series

1964 INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER SCOUT 80 RED CARPET SERIES - PROJECT
Here for your consideration is a one-year only (1964) IH Scout 80 Custom Red Carpet Series. I ordered copies of the Line Setting Ticket (LST: this document proves this Scout is an original Red Carpet Series model) & Chassis Inspection Card from the Wisconsin Historical Museum (thanks Allie!) and these 2 PDF documents will be included along with the clear Texas title for the winning bidder.
History of this special Scout: I happened to inquire at the right time about purchasing this Scoutwhich was lying abandoned in a home in El Paso, TXfrom the daughter of the original owner. The LST confirms this Scout was purchased in 1964 in El Paso by the first owner, a successful multiple business owner who bought the SUV new and used it until the motor seized in the late 80s. I bought this Scout in early October 2017 and initially I did not know it was a Red Carpet Series until I ordered/received the LST. I hoped to restore this Scout but I have too many projects and so I am selling this 64 to the highest bidder.
As mentioned the motor of this 64 is seized, we took off the oil pan and found no metal debris and everything looked very clean but we decided not to disassemble the motor once I made the decision to sell this SUV. Please note this Scout retains one original IH steel wheel and IH "turbine" wheel cover correct for the Red Carpet Series, it is the spare mounted in the back. The 4 after market aluminum rims on this Scout are vintage 70s/80s. The tires are dry rotted but the Scout does roll as tubes are used in all 4 tires. Please keep in mind this Scout has not moved on its own power for decades so you will have to check the drivetrain and all components and repair as needed. We did adjust the normal brakes to aid in transporting/moving this truck but the emergency brake needs to be adjusted and currently does not work. I am selling this Scout As Is, Where Is with no warranty expressed or implied. You will need a winch to load this vehicle.
General condition: Fair, please see all pictures & videos and ask any questions you may have. To summarize:
> Needs total restoration> Motor is seized, we could not figure out what is wrong with the engine so it will have to be rebuilt> Minimal rust throughout, El Paso is very dry with little rain and rarely any snow.> Doors need new hinges.> Passenger door has a dent as does door rocker, small hole inside cabin passenger floor> Passenger rear lower quarter panel has dents> 3 speed manual transmission & transfer case (4x4): I assume they both work as the 1st owner's daughter said the only problem the SUV had was the engine. No warranty on the drivetrain.> Obviously needs new paint, upholstery, etc.> Windshield is broken/cracked but all other glass is original and in excellent shape (on these early Scouts you can fold the windshield down like a Jeep)> The two gas tanks should be completely cleaned prior to use as this Scout has been idle for a long time. The driver's side fuel tank cover plate is missing, you can see that in the video I took, the passenger side fuel tank cover is there.> 1st owner cut out a square shaped piece of metal from the transmission hump, that needs to be patched up, I don't know why that modification was made.> Strangely, to tighten both the front and rear passenger side wheel lug nuts you turn them counter clockwise (you turn them clockwise to take them off). The driver's side front and rear wheel lug nuts are normal (turn clockwise to tighten & counter clockwise to take them off).> The Travel Top is removable! Fun in the sun.> Please note this Scout does not come with a battery, you can see one briefly in the 2nd video but that is from another vehicle and is not included in this sale> Clear Texas title in my name

model overviewHistory of the 1961-1971 International Harvester ScoutInternational Truck's Chief of Design, Ted Ornas, came up with the idea of a small utility vehicle to complement the company's light-duty trucks. Named the Scout, the new utility's body was originally intended to be open and made of plastic composites but technological and budgetary constraints led to the 1961 models leaving the assembly line with traditional steel body-on-frame construction.

Less traditional was International Harvester's choice of power. The Scout's 152-cid slant-four engine was essentially the right bank of IH's 304-cid V-8 and even though it only offered 93 horsepower, the Scout was small enough and the engine robust enough that buyers didn't seem to mind.

International Harvester had originally envisioned the Scout as a light-chore truck, and as such, most of the original production was oriented towards two-wheel-drive pickup versions. However, almost immediately, demand was strongest for the Travel Top wagons with optional four-wheel drive. Also, most sales were conquests from other manufacturers, ranging from domestic pickups to pleasure cars. In short order, the Scout was not only competing with Jeep's product line, but helping to establish what we now know as the SUV.

By 1964, the Scout was successful enough that more than 100,000 had been built. To celebrate, IH offered its first limited edition Scout—the Red Carpet Special. Other limited editions included the Champaign Edition (1965), the Aristocrat (1969), the Comanche (1970), and the SnoStar (1971).

For 1965, an optional turbocharger became available for the Scout's four-cylinder, but a more practical solution was the larger 196-cid slant-four option (fashioned from the 392-cid V-8) that International introduced in 1967. In the middle of that same year the Scout received its first V-8—with 266 cid. By the end of production early in 1971, powertrain choices ranged from the 196-cid slant-four, to inline sixes, up to 304-cid V-8s.

Through its production run, the Scout was equipped with more and more car-like features, but was still desired for its off-road and foul-weather capabilities. The same remains true today.

" Red Carpet" Series, celebrating the 100,000 Scout manufactured by IH and there were only 3,000* produced. This model had a red interior with a white exterior, full length headliner and full floor mats, and a special medallion, that was silver plated affixed to the door which read,"Custom". This Scout was a step up from regular ones, it was marketed to attract more people, it was often advertised with women in mind. Each International dealer in the United States received one Red Carpet Series Scout to be used in parades, in the showroom and for promotional purposes.
