Description of 1959 Jaguar XK SE

Excellent, numbers matching Open Two-Seater example in Carmen Red over Black Leather! Factory appointed with Special Equipment performance package providing 210hp through a 4-speed gearbox with overdrive! Beautifully restored in 2014 with new paint, all chrome, convertible top, stainless steel exhaust, chrome wire wheels & tires, and more! An outstanding road-going Jaguar! Boasting from the success of the XK120, Jaguar did what all great sports car manufacturers do which was contribute new features to counter criticisms to keep reeling in... buyers. This led to the introduction of larger interior cabin space by moving the engine, firewall, and dash all forward by 3" to better accommodate taller drivers, along with effortless rack & pinion steering, improved brakes and suspension travel with shock absorbing dampening. Cosmetically it appeared nearly the same as the XK120, but larger bumpers with over riders, a one-piece grill accented with trim that ran over the hood through to the deck lid for the revised XK140. By 1958, after consecutive Leman's success from 1955, 1956, and 1957, a new XK150 would be introduced. This meant some revisions to the body that included a taller beltline, larger interior, leather-wrapped dashboard, a one-piece windshield, and for the first time in the open two-seater (OTS) roll-up windows hidden within the doors. A new emblem was affixed to the trunk highlighting its heritage being the winner at Le Mans from 1951-1953, 1955-1957! We are very pleased to offer this 1959 Jaguar XK150 SE OTS Roadster. Finished in desired Carmen Red with new black leather interior and new black cloth convertible top, it remains fully equipped with original, numbers matching 3442cc Inline 6 cylinder engine fitted with the Special Equipment option that included dual SU H6 carburetion, front disc brakes, modified B-type cylinder head with larger exhaust ports providing a factory rated 210 horsepower; along with gorgeous 60-spoke chrome wire wheels wrapped in newer Lester Tire Co 6.00-16 wide whitewall tires, dual exit exhaust, telescoping steering column, laminated windscreens, heat/defrost, and dual fender-mounted mirrors! This exceptional example comes from the longtime Indianapolis owner, Tom Gellenbeck, who acquired this Jaguar in the 1970s. He commissioned a cosmetic restoration soon after purchase, and proudly utilized his stellar roadster for some four decades. It was always a garage kept and continues to bear a wonderfully solid chassis and body that has remained original without any noted damage or rust repair. He enjoyed this XK150 until health issues forced the sale in 2014. Prior to putting his prized possession on the market, he asked Jaguar restoration experts Muncie Imports & Classics in Muncie, Indiana to prepare it for the next owner. This began with a complete overhaul of the brake system: new brake servo, brake lines, fittings, hoses, and brake fluid; new Dayton chrome wire wheels & tires; air filter, complete ignition system with new plugs & wires; new transmission fluid, engine oil/filter; cam cover gaskets, all coolant/heater hoses; cylinder head gasket, exhaust manifold gaskets; new differential pinion seal & gasket; differential input flange, clutch hose, among many other various smaller items to ensure it would be equally enjoyable for the next owner. This service would equal nearly $8,400. When the new Jefferson City, MO owner acquired this outstanding example in 2014, he elected to have the body professionally repainted. All of the exterior chrome was removed and re-plated, and the convertible top replaced with a new, black Stayfast canvass over a freshly powder-coated frame. The entire exhaust was replaced with a polished stainless steel system from Engel Imports. Overall, it remains very presentable today and in remarkable condition. With all functional gauges and working safety items, it is a difficult car to criticize mechanically. It starts with wonderful ease, idles down appropriately after about one minute of warm-up time, and then performs to proper Jaguar expectation! To ensure it continues with such performance, both batteries were replaced in January 2019, along with a new starter solenoid and ignition switch. It also comes with its original painted spare tire, correct jack, mallet, wrench, crank handle, and oiler in the storage compartment. The odometer upon arrival to our showroom read only 40,542 miles which would appear to be original, but the St. Louis Car Museum does not have enough evidence to support an actual mileage claim. It does represent one of only 2,265 Open Two-Seater XK150 Roadsters built between 1958 through 1960, and continues to be a splendid driver example eager to cruise all open roads with confidence!
