Delivering performance that remains impressive even by todays jaded standards, the XK120 redefined Jaguar as a constructor of some of the most desirable automobiles on either side of the Atlantic. Incredible, considering the car itself was an afterthought, intended only as an attention-grabbing showcase for Jaguars new XK DOHC 6-cylinder powerplant introduced at the 1948 London Motor Show! Maintaining the XK120s competitive edge in racing and showroom sales, the SE or Special Equipment package (designated M for Modified in America) was first available in 1951 and through 1954 when the XK140 arrived. Engine output rose to 180 HP with a pair of high-lift cams; other upgrades included wire-spoke wheels, auxiliary driving lamps, overdrive, and from May 1953, a lightened flywheel for quicker engine response. Accompanied by its corresponding JDHT (Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust) certificate, this late-production 1954 Jaguar XK120 SE Roadster was built on 16 July 1954. Interesting late-production items include the curved handbrake lever, flat horn button, and flatter seats yielding more passenger space. Two weeks later on July 30, 1954, it was shipped to California via official Jaguar importer Charles Hornburg of Los Angeles. Under the prior owner, the Jaguar was given a comprehensive frame-off restoration to concours standard in 2014 at Bill Tracy Jaguar of Sarasota, Florida. The restoration has been carefully maintained ever since, with accolades including a Best of Show award and JCNA (Jaguar Clubs North America) judging scores of 99.59 and 99.79/100 (both during 2016) resulting in second place in the JCNA Southeastern Region championship despite the cars modern radial tires and louvered bonnet. This XK120 SE retains its matching numbers engine block and while the cylinder head was replaced during the engine rebuild, the original is included with the sale of the car. The original gearbox was replaced. Colors are striking, with Red paint and Black leather upholstery, plus a Black soft top, tonneau cover, and matching side curtains. A period style Brooklands windscreen adds a 1950s racing flavor, with proper covers included when the full windshield is not in use. Documents include the JDHT certificate, print and CD handbooks, and a judging sheet and award confirmation from the JCNA. A full spare wheel/tire, roadside jack, air pump, tool roll, and wheel hammer round out this stellar 1954 Jaguar XK120 SE Roadster.
