Description of 1979 Jeep CJ |
1979 Jeep CJ7 AMC 304 5.0L V8, 4-speed -Bikini top and half doors (black) -Full soft top and soft doors (copper/brown) Purchased from a family member in 2005 and completed restoration in 2015. Everything but the engine has been rebuilt or replaced with brand new, OEM components. During restoration, the old body was removed (cut about a foot behind the firewall) and replaced with a newer, less corroded one. A newer hood and front fenders were also swapped out. New floor pans were welded in and new body bushings were also installed (after some patchwork to the frame, new gas and brake lines, shocks and springs). The bodywork consisted mostly of body filler, sanding and sealant. Then after much sanding, it was primed, sealed and painted (bumpers and tire rack were done at the same time). The paint is "hot rod" black, not quite a dry flat, but certainly not glossy. Overall it's holding up well for being over three years since it was painted (the Jeep has been garaged nightly for nearly all of that time, and rarely driven during the winter months). There are a few areas (one about the size of a hand near the passenger fender) that has bubbled and some small rust areas have surfaced. Touch-up easily covers those spots. The original paint color was the copper color (the dash is the original paint and also behind the chrome grill cover is all original paint). The engine is original -- nearly everything that attaches to it, though, has been rebuilt or replaced (i.e. carburetor, thermostat, water pump, oil pressure unit, plugs, wires, fuel lines, etc.). The same goes for the rest of the Jeep -- it has around 700 miles on brand new front and rear axles (lifetime warranty at 4WheelParts) and all new u-joints on the drive shafts and front axles, new axle seals and bearings. Newer rear brakes and drums, and it has brand new front calipers, pads, and brake hoses (though I have noticed that it needs new front rotors now -- brakes still operate fine). All the gauges except the fuel (it might need a new sending unit) and clock work perfectly. The steering wheel needs aligned, but the actual wheel alignment is fine (drives straight). Horn works great! It has a new Bluetooth radio and two speakers -- synchronizes great with any smartphone (hands-free, streaming audio, etc.). Best Top center console with 12V port and 6-can beverage cooler. Best Top rear seat cover and padded roll bar cover. New glove box. Rugged Ridge All Terrain front and rear floor mats. The list goes on and on and on! I have meticulously maintained this vehicle, but let's not kid ourselves... it's a Jeep, so it's allowed to get dirty and being that it's 40 years old, things can (and do) go wrong from time to time. If you like tinkering, it's easy to work on. A great Jeep with a great story -- come and see it or send a message with any questions. |
