Description of 1970 Mercury Montego MX |
NO RESERVE. this car will sell to the highest bidder. so bid to win. What we have is a remarkably original Mercury. and it is literally a piece of Nascar history. NOT some tribute car. The car was trailered from race to race in the early 70's by a Purolator executive. that exec's name is Bill Budzinski. Bill was personally responsible for Purolator sponsorship of the number 21 race team. Wood Bros with driver David Pearson. one of the winningest drivers in Nascar history. The body of this car is 100% original. along with what makes the car. the original paint. original decals. and stripes that were put on the car when new. It's never been in a major collision. although there are dents. dings. and scratches as expected on a car that was toured all over the east. and south throughout the United States at Nascar Winston Cup races. and speedways. It was also driven as a daily driver in different parts of the country. and also spent many years in a collection in Canada. The car does/will run. but will need a battery. tuning. and at least one freeze plug replaced. it is leaking coolant now. I have driven the car recently. and wow it screams history. The slotted mags that the car rolled around on when Mr. Budzinski used to tour the car are long gone. but there is one left in the truck that was a spare. I installed Nascar style wheels from Summit. and brand new 245/60R15 tires so the car looked a little more correct. The car is extremely period correct. original. and very nostalgic. As stated in the auction title. this is NOT a tribute car. this is a very real one of a kind Purolator Promotional car. It's not every day an opportunity like this comes along. it is pure history. There is only one other Purolator Promo car that I know of. and it's a 1973. This car is the only known 70/71 model. In some circles it's been said there was three of these cars made in this body. others say six. But. this is the only one known today. It's also the only one left with the original paint. decals. and stripes from back then. The actual race car has been fully restored. and is in the Wood Bros museum. where this car still wears it's original paint and patina. I have the original Va plates. last year licensed there was 1978 as stickered on plates. Danville Va inspection sticker where sold new still affixed to the windshield. Note proximity to Wood Bros shop in Va. Wood Bros also purchased vehicles from the same dealer this car was purchased through for there own uses. I must stress this is NOT the type of car you would restore. or repaint. I personally considered installing a period correct Nascar cage. dash. seats. engine/trans. but I've decide not to. Take note of some of the correct Nascar treatments also original to the car like the grill. and Aluminum chin spoiler up front etc. These items. including rear deck spoiler are also completely original to the vehicle. Through doing research on the car. which was somewhat challenging due to the Purolator race sponsorship program being killed off decades ago I was able to by chance find out who was responsible for the car (Budzinski). and sponsorship of Wood Bros race team. When I was able to figure out who the man was. I was able to then find out who I could contact to talk about the car itself. Mr. Budzinski passed away in the mid 90's. but I am now acquainted with his son's. and I have had many email. and telephone conversations with his son Joe who rode in the car countless times to many destinations including the tracks. One other thing. the car has some surface rust in places. but otherwise extremely solid. Torque boxes. and the rest of the bottom of the car is very clean. There may be some minor rust somewhere I've missed possibly. but I'm just not seeing any cancer on this car anywhere. I'm sure I've missed something. feel free to email through ebay with questions etc. Save and bid. there's only one of these cars. and it's a true piece of Nascar. and Purolator History. As is where is. Happy bidding!!! |
