Description of 1965 Mercury Comet Caliente Convertible

Exceptionally straight and solid Western car, I believe I’m the 3rd owner. First owner (Helen P.) still has her name on a custom script on the dash:). Sold new at Central Motors in Pueblo, CO, then spent most of its life in the arid climate of Eastern WA. Per info on title the 2nd owner purchased in 1997 brought it to Western WA and sold to me in 2007. This is one of just 6035 Comet convertibles that were built in 1965 (all were the Caliente trim level-no Cyclone convertibles). Paint is original and has been rubbed thin in several places, and the tops of the front fenders have been chipped-I assume original owner’s husband had a big belt buckle or something, lol. Other than a couple of small dings, the body and floors are in outstanding condition, with no previous bodywork noted anywhere. All trim is intact, including the hard to find wheel lip moldings. Interior is in very nice original condition, with an uncracked two spoke woodgrain plastic steering wheel and original uncracked dash pad. Upholstery and carpets have some wear, but no holes and are original as well. Trunk is very original as well, still retaining the sewn trunk mat. I’ve never had it out in the rain so I’ve never replaced the power convertible top, which is getting a bit tattered and could be replaced. The engine has never been rebuilt and though it runs well, it is displaying a fair amount of blow-by out of the breather these days and will need a standard rebuild soon. The only modifications I’ve done are to add unassisted CSRP ‘65 Mustang-style aftermarket front disc brakes with a ‘67 style dual master cylinder. At that time I also added ‘67/‘68 14x5” steel wheels with disc brake clearance and a nice set of ‘65 Comet Cyclone simulated mag wheel covers (original 10.5” hubcaps included). I replaced the rear brake cylinders and shoes as well. This summer I replaced all four tires with new 195/75/R14 whitewall radials with 2023 date codes as the previous tires were showing some dry rot I wasn’t comfortable with. That’s the gist of it. I hope to find a good 4th caretaker for this car. This is your chance-a do over!- to find a classic Comet ragtop in the same condition you would have found it in a dry climate sometime in the 1970’s. There are no hard to find parts needed. Thank you for your interest in my classic Comet. Full payment (less $250 deposit) will be due before title and vehicle are released to buyer. Wire transfers are preferred. Signed clear WA title will be overnighted to buyer after funds are transferred. I’m happy to FaceTime or Zoom with prospective buyers and show both the car and my title in real time prior to funds transferring to give confidence if my good 24 year Ebay history isn’t enough. Thanks for reading!
