1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler 429 SCJ Triple Black One of One ! Funny how life pans out sometimes I had a phone call the other day from a friend who deals in muscle cars and other interesting performance machinery. The conversation went a bit like this " Hi Tone have something very special in the garage at the moment You had better get down here quick as this car is just passing through". My reply consisted of three words "On my way". So there I am on a gorgeous sunny day in deepest Kent and I cannot believe my eyes as I gaze upon a 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler with a Super Cobra Jet Boss 429ci engine and automatic transmission.How rare is rare well one of one fits that bill. Out of 1631 Cyclone Spoilers built that year only 766 came with 429's and only 341 with the "Drag Pack" option giving a rear Locker axle ratio of 4.30.1. Only 31 surfaced with Special Paint Treatment but only one came through painted black with black stripes and decals. This just happened to be an"ordered" car with loads of options built in May 1970. Check out the stealth like looks that are followed through with heavily tinted glass. The car stops instantly with heavy duty front disc brakes and handles well courtesy of front and rear sway bars. Those chrome magnum 500 wheels are shod with period Firestone tyres. Those front chin and rear deck spoilers give the car an extra dimension in the looks department. The car is immaculate and beautifully detailed in every department even the underside is meticulously spotless. This car is not over-restored to the point of being a non driver it is finished just right and that means it's a real handful on the street and great fun in full flow. For those unfamiliar with the Mercury Cyclones and Spoilers these cars were built off the Montego platform with 116" wheelbases and were aimed initially at the wide oval super speedways of NASCAR yet many teams found success in the shorter tracks of ARCA (Automobile Racing Club of America). For 1969 Mercury produced 519 Cyclone Spoiler and Spoiler II cars for homologation purposes to enter NASCAR. To confuse matters even more Mercury built standard nose models (Spoilers) and droop snoop long nose versions called Spoiler II's.They all came with 351ci four barrel engines although the company did at first promote the 428ci power plant for which Ford chose to sit in their Torino Talladega's virtually identical in appearance to the Mercury's but all with the more aero friendly front ends. As Ford and Chrysler locked horns in the 1969 and 1970 NASCAR seasons the cars became quicker and the "aero wars" began as all the teams looked for an advantage in aerodynamic design and slipstream racing. Dodge had Bobby Isaacs and Charlie Glotzback Plymouth had Richard Petty and Pete Hamilton Ford had David Pearson and Donnie Allison and Mercury Cale Yarborough and Dan Gurney. The Spoiler II's reflected their drivers in appearance as Yarborough Specials received Candy Apple red roofs over Wimbledon White bodies and the Gurney specials sported Presidential Blue roofs. Both cars came with signature decals. Mercury released the cars with no fanfares hype or hullabaloo almost resigned to playing second fiddle to big brother The Ford Motor Company. In those two seasons of NASCAR all the teams played their parts sure Ford won the series in 69 with the Talladega of David Pearson and 70 saw Bobby Isaacs take the crown in a Daytona yet the Spoilers didn't just make up the numbers they raced to best that Ford would allow. For 1970 the Cyclone received a revamp including a longer wheelbase of 117" and the car grew in length nearly six inches due to a redesign of the front wings and grille complete with a protruding ornamental "gun sight" sitting in the middle. Ford stylists that year were working on a King Cobra design for the Talladega consisting of a long swoopy nose cone similar to the Plymouth Superbird these noses could also be applied to the Cyclone Spoiler II's. Until recently there was much speculation about the existence of any of the 1970 long nose Spoiler II cars. However an original specimen showed up at Ford's 100thbirthday celebration complete with factory paperwork and a dealer bill of sale. Complete with a 429ci power plant this seems to be the only original surviving 70 Cyclone Spoiler II in the world. Mercury cranked out 13496 Cyclones that year from their Loraine Ohio factory. Engine choices were all big blocks but only one built in black with the Boss 429 the car you see here. One of a kind for sure. Of them 1631 came with 429CJ-4V Engines of which 766 had Automatic Transmissions. Of those 18 were painted with Special Paint and 12 of them had Black Knitted Bucket Seats Of those 1 had a Super Cobra Jet Engine with a 4.30 Traction-Lok Axle. 0H17C575284 is that Cyclone !
