Description of 1974 MG MGB |
More detailed photos at: https://imageshack.com/a/3j1l/1 Features: Early 1974 MGB ‘Chrome Bumper’ Roadster Complete, down to bare metal, unibody restoration, 2010. Rebuilt engine with many performance upgrades, details below. Virtually all new electrical and mechanical components throughout car. All leather interior with upgraded carpet throughout. New Sunfast canvas top (Tan) with zip-out rear window. New Sunfast canvas top boot (Black). (6) 205/55/R15 BR Goodrich G Force T/A tires. (5) Minilite 15” mag wheels. Beautiful deep green with subtle gold flakes - aftermarket paint. No obvious rust. Car is very clean, runs strong, and well sorted.
Below is a description, in part, I received from the previous owner in 2013:
The car was restored by Baker Automotive Restoration (BAR), Charlotte, NC. for the owner of the company. BAR is a private classic car restoration company. After being disassembled, the car was hydro-blasted to bare metal, primed, painted and reassembled. The 1.8 L engine (18GB-U-H 19527 5 main bearing) has been completely rebuilt. The “PECO” header and the Weber Cannon intake have received an aluminum ceramic coating and unleaded gas can be used.Car has a 38 DGES “Outlaw” carb and mild street cam and exhaust is thru an ANSA exhaust system. In addition, the car has a new Ecco electric fuel pump and new 45D electronic ignition from Brittek - curved for stage 1 performance upgrades. The transmission and rear end have been cleaned, inspected and new seals and bearings were installed. Car has new clutch, throw-out bearing and pressure plate. The brakes were completely rebuilt with slotted and cross-drilled front rotors. Red polyurethane bushings are used throughout.New lower leaf springsare installed in the rear with new Monroe air shocks as part of a rear shock conversion kit. A front tube shock conversion kit was used to replace the lever shocks. There is also a new “MOCAL” oil cooler with stainless steel lines. Most lines (oiler cooler, fuel, brake and clutch) arealso s/s braided. Thecar has a new heater system, headlight upgrade, side marker light upgrade, single front Lucas driving light and a custom mesh grille and new chrome bumpers. All smog components have been removed. In addition, it has the following: new wiring harness and switches, relays, starter, alternator, etc. New rubber door and trunk seals, powder coated seat and convertible top frame members, sunfast canvas top, and sunfast canvas boot top, tan floor carpet throughout, both carpet and rubber MG logo floor mats, tan carpeted trunk with vinyl covered spare, also with MG logo. Also, new tool kit, rear mounted Optima Redtop 12V battery; 2 additional new spares 205/55ZR/15g-Force T/A BF Goodrich tires: one mounted on Minilite style rim, an extra tire (not mounted) is also included. The car has a new secret audio SST radio with MP3 adapter and a 6 CD changer with remote control. New powder coated tonneau bars; center console cup holder; new retractable seat belts with guides, new shift knob, wood rim steering wheel, British Flag towel seat covers; MG logo heat shield under front hood, new wind screen washer pump and bottle; new passenger window; new fuel gauge and car cover. Over all, I think you would be hard pressed to find such a great looking, great cornering and performing, great sounding and very clean car with virtually all new components, classic looks and sensible performance upgrades. But, be aware, it is not a perfect car and there will always be issues - it is wonderfully British. I am retired and selling to downsize my vehicles.
Some negatives: Although the paint color is truly beautiful, I understand the original builder became ill before having a chance to do the final sanding on the clear coat. As a result, there are 3 panels that have small imperfections in the clear coat. I have discounted the car accordingly. Otherwise it is really very nice paint and body. Also, know that the car rides firm, as it has very low profile tires. In addition, speedo will occasionally bounce at higher speeds, air shocks leak at higher pressures, but hold pretty well at lower pressure where I think you would want them anyway. In addition, fan plumbing is not connected, and on occasion there is a momentary binding of the steering column at very slow speed turn that does not affect driving, otherwise steers solid in all other driving conditions.
I encourage prospective buyers to visit personally or have the car inspected. My knowledge of MGs is limited and nobody likes surprises.
Some Data Points
Compression: 140, 145, 145, 145. (Cylinders 1-4). Oil pressure: Approximately 50-55 lb while driving, 25-35 lb at idle. Smoking: Puff of very light blue smoke if engine revved hard from idle. No obvious smoke while driving. Oil consumption: Seems very light and well within normal limits. Oil leaks: No obvious leaks. Thanks, Jeff
