1970 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible with a 4-Speed

This was your Father's Oldsmobile if he was the cool Dad on the block. 442 stands for 4-speed/4-barrel/Dual Exhaust! This 442 has it all!!! The price of gas has fallen so now all the muscle cars can be driven daily without breaking the bank. Opportunities like this don't come around very often. It is no great secret that the 1970 442 Convertible has more than doubled in price over the last 5 years. This is an extremely rare genuine 1970 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible that has the first three numbers of the vin number start with 344 to prove this is a real 442. That is the way to verify these cars came from the factory ordered as a genuine 442 convertible. I'm sure most 442 guyswill tend to agree that it is very rare to find one with a 4-speed. 1970 has proven to be one of the most expensive and highly sought after years to acquire from the pinnacle of the muscle car era. Oldsmobile only made 2933 442 Convertible's in 1970. I was told that the number of manual transmission 442 Convertible's were less than 20 percent of all the 442's made. There simply are not that many left in existence. This real 442 was purchased out of upstate New York and was last registered and inspected in July of 1991 as apparent by the picture of the New York State inspection decal on the windshield. The previous owner said this engine is the original engine to the car, ut I couldn't make out any numbers on the stamp pad under the power steering pump. I have to say that before the engine was detailed it did look to me like this Big Block Rocket 455 engine had never been removed from this 442. This Rocket does have a Rochester 4-barrel Quadrajet carburetor under the awesome functioning original from 1970 ram-air induction air cleaner. As shown in the engine pictures the ram-air cleaner does work properly while this Big Block Rocket 455 engine is running. When the accelerator is pressed is when the flapper door opens up to draw more air into the carburetor to increase the horsepower. Even the original heat riser tube is still connected to the air cleaner as shown on the passenger side engine picture. The original control arm covers are still present on both front inner fender wells. The correct W and Z exhaust manifolds are in nice condition and this Big Block does have the correct E-heads for a 1970 Oldsmobile 442. This Rocket 455 does have the proper 396021 F casting numbers for the 1970 442 as well. I personally do believe it has the original Big Block 455 cubic inch Rocket engine, ut have no way to verify that statement to be fact. The gentleman I made this purchase from said that he had the entire clutch assembly replaced including the clutch plate and throw out bearings. I haven't driven this 442 much except for around town a few times, ut the clutch engages at just the right spot and feels great. I have to say this 442 drives nice and straight down the road with finger tip control. I tried to place all of the correct decals in the proper spots that came throughout this 442 from the factory before it hit the showroom floor back in 1970. There was a fresh oil change and AC Delco oil filter installed this week to prepare this 442 for sale. This engine starts right up with new AC Delco spark plugs and new blue Super Stock 8MM spark plug ignition wires for maximum spark. There are newer dual exhaust that makes this Big Block sound wicked with that factory rumble. The new tail pipes have original chrome trumpets coming out the cut-out rear bumper. All of the head lights were replaced with new low beam and high beam Halogen headlights for premium brightness. All of the chrome on this true 442 is in nice driver's quality condition or better. The prior owner said this true 442 does havethe original 12-bolt positive traction "posi" rear-end believed to be a 3.23 with the original boxed control arms, nd the original rear sway bar. The rear-end differential fluid was changed last week with Mobil 1 and upgraded with a new aluminum W-27 12-bolt rear-end cover. The original posi tag was put back in place. The paint work was recently done this past autumn in beautiful Code 28 Twi-light Blue with three coats of base coat followed byfour coats of the most expensive clear coat I could find on the market. It was wet sanded at three different levels of 1000, 200, ollowed by 2000 grit, nd then buffed to bring out the mirror shine as evident by the pictures. I've been told by everyone who sees this car that the paint work on this convertible looks spectacular. There will be endless compliments coming to whoever is the lucky winner of this rare classic. It was very hard to keep people away while I was just trying to shoot the pictures. The white stripes did come out tremendously. I challenge anyone to look around at the other 442's out there, nd they will see stripes running uphill or down hill along with different thicknesses even on near 100 point show cars. I take pride in my striping and it would be hard to find any stripes close to how nice the stripes look on this 442. The fenders on this carare original 1970 fenders with no groves in the fender gutters unlike the 71-72 model year fenders that have little bumps on the fender gutters. The hood is an original genuine GM steel framed ram-air hood with chrome twistdowns. I believe the 442 ram-air induction hood is the nicest looking hood on any muscle car bar none. The front floor pans have had some patchwork, ut were done with the correct floor replacement panels. The carpeting looks like it was replaced at that time, ecause it is in very nice shape with newer door sills. There is also a new set of fourblack carpetedfloor mats. The bucket seat console interior is done in Pearlescent white and appears in very nice condition as shown in the pictures with all 5 pairs of the original seat belts. The front bucket seats were recently professionally reupholstered, o they should be nice and comfortable for many years to come. The wiper blades were replaced last week and the wipers work on both speeds. The heater is hot and works on all three speeds. The dash board is in very nice shape with no cracking and an original AM/FM radio is still in the dash. I believe that is the correct AM/FM for 1970 where the face plate has both AM and FM channels on the face plate. The radio will need to be hooked up, ut at least this dash was never cut up like was typically done back in the day to fit aftermarket stereo's. The dash includes rally gauges which still need to be hooked up although it does have a working tachometer tic-toc-tac. The factory buzzer still works with the key in the ignition. Inside the drivers door still possesses the original blue General Motors manufacturer decal with the vin number still in tact showing this car was built in May of 1970. The power convertible top is about two years old and has only been put down about a dozen times. It was far too cold out to put the top down for pictures, ut it does go up and down through the switch on the dash board. I did not want to risk any top damage. All the top down fun can be had by the new owner. Spring is right around the corner! There is a newer California boot cover in the trunk to place over the top when it goes down into the well. The top well and the top padding were all replaced at the time the top was changed. This442 sits on a set of four B. F. Goodrich Radial T/A raised white lettered steel belted radial tires with nice tread mounted on 14 inch Super Stock I wheels. All four wheels have all four bolt-on center caps,all fourbeauty trim rings, nd all new chrome lug nuts. The frame is in good condition and the trunk floor looks to be original and in nice shape. It was coated with A/C Delco black and aqua spatter spray to appear like it came out of the factory. There is a new trunk gasket with a new trunk mat that has an original 1970 442 restored jack, ack stand, umper mount, nd crow bar sitting on top of the mat. Also included in the trunk is full size Super Stock I spare wheel with a B.F. Goodrich spare tire. This way if there is ever a mishap the car can be back on the road in minutes looking complete. This442 came from thefactory with power front disc brakes. It is very rare to find a real 442 with this many factory options that include: tinted glass, ower steering, ower disc brakes, ower windows, ucket seats, onsole, nd matching clam shell sport mirrors with the drivers side being remote controlled. This Olds is steered by the awesome four spoke 442 sport wheel. This 442 is being sold with a clean and clear title issued in my name from the State of Wisconsin. The actual mileagestated on the odometer reads just over 87,000 miles. I have no way to verify the mileage as original, lthough nowadays the mileagecomes upexempton a new change of ownership title when a car is more than 10 years old. Included in the glove box is the 1970Oldsmobile original owner's manual and the consumer information pamphlet in the original plastic case that came with the car back in 1970. It looks like this 442 was sold by Thor A. Dahl-Lowe "The God of Thunder" Your Cadillac Salesman. His stamp was put on the front of the consumer information pamphlet and the back of the owners manual. I have no knowledge where the dealership was that Thor sold this car from, ut I'm sure he took pride in selling this thunderous 442 forty six years ago. These older classics that have survived for nearly half a century are becoming harder and harder to find. I just received a message from a gentleman who worked on the General Motors Oldsmobile line in Linden, ew Jersey for 37 years from 1967-1984 where this 1970 442 convertible was built. He was kind enough to let me know that out of the 2,933 cars built only 539 were made with the 4-speed option. This is a very rare convertible! The time is running out to find a nice one!
