1968 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible The Ninety Eight from 1992 to 1996 was the full-size flagship model of Oldsmobile that was produced from 1940 until 1996. The name - reflecting a "Series 90" fitted with an 8-cylinder engine - first appeared in 1941 and was used again after American consumer automobile production resumed post-World War II. It was, as it would remain, the division's top-of-the-line model. Taking up some serious space here in our halls at Classic Auto Mall is this large steel slabbed chrome laden convertible example of the series 98. With awesome late 60's more squared off styling this beauty is well preserved, because it has been well cared for. A near showroom interior, very nice respray, and perfectly working top, this is a turnkey classic in that you can come in and turn the key and start driving to your first car show. You know you want it. Exterior Gallons of Willow Gold covers the exterior of those large panels which mind their gaps very nicely. This original has a mere 59,155 original miles, and it looks the part. Merely a few little faults on the exterior, beautiful badging, very nice trim, and big chrome bumpers are just a few of the highlighters on this stunner. A perfectly preserved and perfectly working power top is on, and has a clear glass window in the rear. The dual egg crate grilles flank a center "beak" and are framed by dual headlights, and a lower gigantic bumper. A long straight steel hood has very nice front quarters on either side, which move rearward to the dual massive doors that swing evenly balanced and can be pushed with 1 finger. Chrome trim in the form of dual side view mirrors, and handles are excellently preserved. A stainless steel rocker cover is on the bottom, and runs the length of the car. Fender skirted rear wheel wells add a touch of class, as does the sloping rear deck and bumper which shares the I integration of the vertical rectangular tail lamps. Just say big and this also describes this classic Olds. Interior About as nice as it gets with rectangular stitched puffy panels on the doors. Here we see an entire control panel of power window, power seat, and power lock controls embedded within. Jade Gold vinyl covers the seats, and is truly showroom condition. These front seats are like large recliners in bucket form, and share a central puffy fold down armrest. A rear bench stretches across the back, and is also pristine. The dash up front is also well heeled, and sports a wood grained appliqu, some padded Jade vinyl, and a strip of aluminum which houses knobs, buttons, radio, and ignition. In the appliqu are a trio of round deep set in an angle gauges with near perfect bezels. An original steering wheel fronts this beautiful dash, and very clean Jade carpeting covers the floors. Drivetrain An all original unrestored big 455ci V8 crowds into the original unrestored engine bay. This big block is topped by a 4 barrel Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and backed by a TH400 3 speed automatic. On the rear is a 10 bolt pumpkin. Undercarriage Surface rust in various stages of involvement, however none impeding the structural integrity of the frame, are noted underneath. Floor pans are totally rust free and lower inside door panels have a light coating of surface rust. Drum brakes are seen on all 4 corners, and stock exhaust is attached. Drive-Ability The first thing one notices is just how nice this interior is preserved. The second thing is how smoothly it idles, and runs. It is a wonderful cruiser with a cushy ride, and good turning qualities. We did notice the rear had some clutch chatter when we turned sharply. The gas gauge is described by the consigner as temperamental at best, and the original clock is not working. This car has its original top and boot, and the top works flawlessly. In the category of survivor, a nice collection of well-preserved interior coverings and surfaces, smooth running engine, and nice exterior with great chrome. This low mileage luxury cruiser collection of Detroit iron is truly a blast from the past and worth a close look and you will note just how good it is!
