Description of 1975 Oldsmobile 98 Hardtop

1975 Oldsmobile 98 Hardtop

From advertising of 1975 "Walt Lecat expects the car he buys to make him feel like a King...or better" Walt worked hard to get where he is, he feels he is entitled to a reward-even in the car he drives, so he bought an Oldsmobile 98, and paid thousands less than he would have for another brand of luxury car. You don't have to be a king to drive a 98, you jut have to want to feel like one.

For consignment a low mileage buttoned up example of the 1975 Oldsmobile 98. America was in the middle of the gas crisis and this car threw convention right in its face with its large size, big powerful 455ci 4 BBL power plant, overwhelming power conveniences, and straight steel panels throughout. She's blue, with a contrasting clean white textured vinyl landau top, and has a clean broadcloth interior. The overall car is nicely presenting and preserved, and worth a close look if you are into big Detroit iron classics.

Exterior
From its front V shapes dual grille flanked by dual headlights on either side and shiny, clean bumper below, to the large steel slabs that make up the smooth sides of this car, all the way back to the cathedral rear taillights, you know you are dealing with Oldsmobile quality that had been well cared for. All bathed in Specter Blue and all looking shiny and nice with no rust. Usage of fine trimmings around the front wheel wells, and a slight mid section trim spear, add some bling to the sides. So does the wide chromed rocker cover and rich looking fender skirts for the rear. A shout out to the window surrounds which are all well preserved, as is the rear landau padded top in white textured vinyl looking clean and tear free. Classy dish wheel covers with Olds badging in the center are wrapped in thin whites all around.

Interior
A swing of the heavy door for plenty of side impact protection, reveals beautiful blue vinyl mixing with chromed accenting, brushed aluminum power option panels, and some carpet below framed in chrome. Power windows and power locks are seen along with a rear-view mirror toggle. Moving inside a blue broadcloth covered split bench, nice and clean with just one small circular tear on the passenger's side, is wonderfully comfortable. Noted are power movements for the driver's seat. Turning to the dash, which is all original 1975 square and rectangle design, we see within a wood appliqu panel cruise control, intermittent wipers, and A/C Heat and airflow controls. In the center is the speedometer, very clean, and a litany of warning lighting along with the gas gauge. A central wood applique square panel houses the radio which is an AM/FM version, rear defogger and power antenna toggles. A large cigarette station pops downward below and a working quartz digital clock is on the passenger side. Also seen is a factory installed CB radio so you can track smokey during those long drives...breaker 1-9, break! Plush blue carpet, fairly clean, floods the floors, and a blue vinyl headliner, nice and tight floats above the long benches for the passengers.

Drivetrain
A 425ci's engine stroke was lengthened to 4.25 to achieve a 455ci V8 which now resides within the nicely preserved and patina unrestored engine bay. Slight corrosion and dirt are around but its a numbers matching original. So is the Turbo Hydramatic transmission attached to the back of this mill.

Undercarriage
Similar to the upside of this car, the undercarriage is nicely preserved, with slight surface rust, plenty of patina undercoating and suspension parts, and no invasive rust. Floorpans are clean as are wheel wells, and original power drum brakes are on the back and power disc brakes are on the front. Power steering is seen as well.

Drive-Ability
This car started easily and ran well throughout the test drive. It has good steady acceleration, a very smooth ride, and the transmission shifted effortlessly. All functions were working fine, even the radio with its power antenna which reaches skyward when you turn the radio on. An overall luxurious pleasurable experience.
