Description of 1966 Pontiac Tempest

Up for sale is a rare and very hard to find 1966 Pontiac Tempest Station Wagon. Built at the GM plant in Fremont, California (Z code) and lived in Oregon until a few months ago. This is one of approximately 11,000 Tempest (including Tempest Custom) wagons built in 1966. Original code P Barrier Blue.
The car has one of the cleanest and most rust-free bodies I have seen in the last 30 years. Not perfect but it would be hard to find a better body and especially on a Tempest station wagon. The body is very straight with a few little dings here and there. The driver side door and driver side quarter panel each have a small crease. The tailgate has a couple small dents. Also, being a base Tempest it does not have the metal belt line trim like the Tempest Custom (easier for a GTO wagon tribute conversion).

  • Absolutely NO rust in the front fenders, hood, doors, tailgate, wheel well arches, dog legs, wheel wells, rocker panels, body cross members, body mounts, spare tire well, gas tank and chassis.

  • The floor pans were rusted out and I have installed new ones. The new floor pans are currently screwed in and should be welded in place but can be used as they are at least in the short term. I have an extra floor panel section that is included. The floor cross members have no rust. It does have a few small rust holes on the floor under the back seat and the cargo floor. Nothing that affects the structure of the car. The cargo floor is pitted.

  • The top of the dash is a bit crusty and has one very small rust hole by the defrost duct outlet. It has a little rust around the driver side rear side window but not too bad. One driver side rear side window reveal molding is missing.

  • The passenger side quarter panel has a couple pin holes near the bottom and appears to have a little body filler that is blistering. The drivers side quarter panel has a few very small blisters in the paint.

  • Mostly original paint with nice looking patina. The chrome on the car is exceptionally nice especially considering its age.

  • The interior needs to be re-upholstered. The original door panels are included to use as patterns. Headliner bows are included as well as interior window moldings. The original rubber cargo area floor mat is included and in pretty good shape considering its age.

  • Runs and drives okay but you would probably want to tune the engine and look over the brakes before taking it on the road. I have a new master cylinder (original single reservoir type) that is included. It has the overhead cam 6 cylinder engine and a 3 speed on the tree transmission set-up. Considering that it already has the clutch pedal set-up and z-bar (bell crank) bracket on the frame, a 4 speed on the floor conversion would be simple.

Keep in mind that this is a 55 plus year old car and it does need work. Please ask any and all question before bidding.
